This week’s lecture, readings and discussion focuses on the importance of self-assessment in the career development process. This assignment will help you focus on your intended career and your perception of the skills you possess that are required to be successful.
Step 1: Values, Interests and Skills
1. Review the following information related to the importance of Career Self-Assessment. http://www.job-hunt.org/career-change/self-assessment.shtml
2. Write one paragraph reflecting on your values.
3. Write one paragraph reflecting on your interests.
4. Write one paragraph reflecting on your favorite skills.
Values
After reviewing some of the questions and pondering about my own values I have …show more content…
come to the conclusion that I am very satisfied with were my current values are. I work due to the fact that I feel a responsibility to finish anything that I have committed myself to. This is a great feeling knowing that although money is most certainly important, I put a premium on the quality of my work and the way in which I accomplish tasks. I am a hard working individual that does not feel entitled to anything and knows that hard work is the only way to get where I want to be in life. I also want to leave a legacy of a man that stood for something because it is important that people felt as though they could trust and rely on me. I feel very proud to say that one of my most prominent role models is my father and that he has instilled in me the values which continue to push me to work hard and respect others.
Interests
When speaking in terms of interest the most basic of interests that comes to mind are my career interests.
I had to think a bit about this one as there are many things in my life that I have enjoyed on a hobby level but that I would never want to be my career. I think that many people make the mistake of thinking just because they enjoy doing something they would also enjoy a career in that field which is not hardly the case. For me, I am extremely interested in the aviation field and I have quite extensive knowledge in the field having served four years as an Air Traffic Controller in the Navy. Part of the reason why I find this field so interesting is the fact that it deals with travel which is another huge interest of mine. I am more of a thinker than someone who likes to express their self and tend to like interaction with things and people rather than with data. I also would really love to dedicate more time to helping animals as I believe their innocence cannot be …show more content…
mistaken.
Favorite Skills
I have many skills that I value and have learned that I possess throughout my many years of traveling and working different jobs around the world.
My most prized skill is my ability to multi-task, it has served me the most throughout both my career and personal life. The skill that most stresses me out when using it is the skill of professionalism, at least in certain cases. What I meant by that last sentence is that I find myself most stressed out when I am in a career field that deals mainly with the public and in most part with difficult customers. For instance, I once held a position as a cell phone repairman and everyone that came to me all day was upset because their phone was obviously broken. The mental toll that that takes when dealing with close to a hundred customers a day is daunting to say the least. I do find myself liking to use a broad range of skills and abilities to accomplish my goals or work as it
were.
Step 2: Personality Assessment
Review the information at http://www.myersbriggs.org/my-mbti-personality-type/mbti-basics/
Based on what you know about yourself determine what you believe your MBTI personality type to be and note it below. Include each of the four letters of your code below. Use one line for each letter. After reviewing the meaning of each letter, include your interpretation of this information and what this means to you. (Your response should be a minimum of two sentences.)
E Being an extrovert to me means that I enjoy being around other people as opposed to being by myself. This also means that I draw energy from others and that this may also impact the way in which I learn and the career paths that I may follow.
S This means that I am more focused on what is physically real and facts that I can actually prove. This also means that I tend to focus solely on facts which can hinder the way I learn or new opportunities.
T I think this falls into line with the other parts of the evaluation where I value cold facts more than people’s values or opinions. This also means that I am extremely methodical in my approach to most tasks.
P This speaks to the spontaneous way in which I tend to like to live my life. If I feel as though things are going to mundane I will often jump in my car and spontaneously take a trip to a random location. This tends to keep my life very interesting but sometimes disorganized.
*Please note you are not being asked to take the instrument, which requires a fee, rather you are being asked to reflect on the information and analyze what you believe your personality type to be.
Step 3: Reflection
Now that you have completed a reflection of your values, personality, skills and interests write one to two paragraphs indicating how this information ties to your career. Be sure to consider all four elements you reflected upon.
Reflecting back on all of the assessments that I have just performed the insight that I have gained is absolutely priceless. I learned that my father is one of if not the biggest influence on my values which is a big part of the reason I work as hard as I do and makes me very proud. I learned that I enjoy multi-tasking when it comes to my career and life and that I prefer to use many different skill sets when accomplishing my tasks. I tend to prefer to work alone with objects rather than people but on a personal level I am an extrovert that gains energy from others. I enjoy traveling very much and the industry that I am going to seek a career in is aviation. I value cold hard facts as opposed to seeing the way that values relate to people, this touches back on the way I tend to like to work alone. I learned that I tend to be spontaneous especially when I feel as things have become too mundane; however I also realize that this may hurt me in the long run if I have trouble settling down or choose the wrong career field. After lumping everything I have learned about myself together I realized that becoming a pilot where I fly in the cockpit with only a minimum number of people and get to spontaneously travel is probably my ultimate career.
