Self-awareness is an important concept to keep in mind while working in the field of social work. Oftentimes, we as human beings allow our personal biases to interfere with the way perform on the job. It is the responsibility of a professional social worker to always be mindful of our own beliefs and values. Prior to taking this course, my knowledge of working with individuals who experience various forms of family violence was minimal. However, this course has taught me a great deal about working with survivors of family violence. Working with these parents have taught me that family violence is a vicious cycle that often repeats itself, especially if there is a lack of education on the topic.
Although I am faced with individuals who are survivors of multiple forms of violence, I am mindful of my personal biases. I generally look towards the root of the problem to work with the client to overcome what brought them to my agency.
Considering that my mother was a survivor of domestic violence, in the past I have been cautious of working with domestic violence offenders, particularly males. However, these social work courses that I have taken have taught me the importance of the offenders working through their problems, just as well as the survivor. In the documentary, Power and Control: Domestic Violence in America (2010), the offender went to a support group to assist with some of the underlying issues he had that allowed him to be violent towards his family. The group assisted with the issues he had and at the end of the documentary he was reunited with his family. What I learned in the documentary, is to ensure clients are aware of support groups and/or other resources that are available to assist with the problem or potential problems clients may be faced
