There is real pleasure when we do our work ourselves. Idle persons depend upon others. If a person fails to help himself, others will not help him well. By depending upon others, he loses self-confidence. He cannot face difficulties boldly. He doubts that without help from others, he will fail to do any work by himself. Thus, people who depend solely on others cannot develop courage, determination and other faculties of the mind in them. And, as is known, God helps those who help themselves
Once, a farmer and his son had called a few relatives to help them with the harvesting of crops. They had a huge farm and a large number of plots to harvest. So, they sought their relatives’ help. They waited for their relatives on the scheduled day but they did not seem to come from anywhere. The farmer assumed that they might have been caught up somewhere. So, he took his son home and went to sleep. The two of them woke up the next morning and waited again. They waited till noon, but their relatives still did not come. The farmer got upset and told his son that they would do it by themselves. It took the father-son duo a great deal of hard work to harvest the crops, but they finished doing that by noon on the next day. The farmer then thought that if his relatives would have come to help him, he would also have had to give them a small share but now that he and his son had done it by themselves, they had the entire harvest to their own names, and so, he felt good about it.
Thus, self-help is the best help
