The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines "self-reliance" as reliance on one's own efforts, and abilities; Personal independence. Synonyms in the thesaurus include aptitude and ability to pertain independence. Yet self-reliance is so much more than it's definition or synonyms; It doesn't exactly mean what the word itself states "Reliance on oneself." It has a wide variety of interpretation and complexity than any definition provided for you whether it's from a reference or one's knowledge. These sublets and complexities determine what self-reliance truly is and what it really is not. Understanding the true meaning of self-reliance is necessary to all human beings especially the ones still growing, because they are the ones who misinterpret the meaning the most. Kathleen Delicato once said " By being true to myself I begin To learn how to stand alone: how to win. " “It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.”

Both Kathleen and Emerson believe in being individuals and putting ourself before anyone else, and to rely on yourself rather than depending on others. Self-Reliance works in a powerful way, such as a path to freedom and independence. Self-Reliance is to believe in your own thought and trust what is true for you deep down in your heart and for all people. A challenge, a benefit, and a skill is self-reliance. It is key to a productive, and confident life as it allows us to be free, and discover all that is available to us. Self-reliance is frightening at first, to take full control of your life, and to explore the opportunities available to us without being led to by others.
