Emerson once said, “Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles.” American society is a difficult place for individuals to express themselves openly without fear of rejection, reaction, and reevaluation. One cannot find self reliance and also be a member of society. Today’s society frowns upon the idea of being selfish. Taking time to be alone and better one’s self is not selfish. Self reliance and self confidence with one’s self is the same concept. It is hard not to compare to another person. Life is not about creating yourself. Life is about finding yourself. Because we have the power to create ourselves, it is easy to become someone that we are simply not. Emerson said, “Insist on yourself; never imitate.” Following other people’s roads leads to a dark, dreary path that is devastating, ending up in an empty parking lot as the final destination. It leads to when a person hears some idea that they had thought in their own mind, said by another person. No one can tell any other individual what their heart looks like. The only person anyone should truly get to know is one’s self. It is the ultimate investment because humans cannot escape or hide from themselves. It is a wise decision to learn about one’s self and then to love one’s self.
There should be absolutely no feelings of disappointment when people refuse to help others. On the contrary, it is actually a major blessing in disguise. Because of them, an individual must learn and act for themselves. There is a high level of confidence when humans can perform tasks without assistance.
