Selfish Vs. Selfless
Astrid Carias
Mr. Baker
English II
30 April, 2012 Selfish vs. Selfless I think people are more selfish than selfless because of the way our society has changed effectively, in terms of behavior. They’re definitely selfless as well, but not as often because of the fact that they sometimes get influenced to do bad by others around them. If it wasn’t for bad influences, I’m sure most people would be very selfless, with good matters, behavior, and actions. I don’t think people are always selfish though; I think that at least once in a while they do something selfless. There are many reasons for why people are now very selfish though, the first reason would probably be that, it’s something people in our generation focus on. That could be because of the fact they always find ways to be bad to others, for example, by bullying, criticizing, offending and so on. In school, mostly in high school though, you would notice a lot of that happening.
Another reason behind it could as well be racism, which has been around for so long that we still haven’t gotten rid of it. That’s a big effect though, because of that people don’t help others out, when in need of assistance. A good example of this would be when, my stepdad saw a black man struggling to get some things out of his truck. Thinking the man might have bad things in his truck, like drugs or a gun that could harm him in some way; he just decided to walk away and not help the man out. Besides being racist, he just wanted to safe himself from getting hurt, if that was possible, by not helping the man out, who looked like he really needed some help. I think not helping the man was just his way of protecting himself and he probably grew up thinking black people are really violent and that’s why he didn’t help. But, that’s exactly what makes him selfish, the fact that he put himself first before others by protecting himself instead of helping the man. If

We must define these two terms to be able to understand the difference between them. Self-interest is when someone is trying to protect their interest, but also take other people into account, and the effects it may have on them. Selfishness if when a person makes decisions based on self with no regard to others. Now that these terms have been defined, we can put them into the competitive market, as it is appropriate for society. If someone is making decisions in an economic market, based on self-interest, they are looking out for both the effects on the company and the customer. If someone is making decisions out of selfishness, they are really only looking out for themselves. This will not benefit the customer, and are the type of people that we want to stay away from.…

What do you think of when you hear the word “egoist”? many view egoists as selfish and self-centered. In fact, a common synonym for selfish is “egotistic”. They think they only care about themselves. This may be true of some who are on the border of egoism and selfishness. However, those who are egoists but are not selfish barely deserve to be called that.…

In the text Twenty Questions by G Lee Bowie, I chose the chapter “Why Shouldn’t I Be Selfish”? In that chapter the two selections that were chosen were The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins and The Virtue of Selfishness by Ayn Rand. The two discuss and give examples of how selfishness is simply for survival and how being selfish can benefit that individual. The term selfishness stated by Ayn Rand is defined as “concern with one’s own interest” (525). In both selections of the chapter both philosophers compared how ones selfish action is based on the question, who benefits from it? Based off of both selections “The Selfish Gene” and “The Virtue of Selfishness” it can be agreed that when one is selfish he thinks of only the benefits he gain from it and not his rival.…

I would have to admit that humans are selfish creatures in general. My reasoning is that in the most intense of situations, most humans will choose to save themselves over anyone else. For example, during the Vietnam War many Americans were unable to fully sympathize with the South Vietnamese and constantly called for the withdrawal of American troops until that request was fulfilled. While I understand the outcry to stop the number of American deaths in Vietnam, I also sympathize with South Vietnamese were under the threat of being overtaken and forced into communism or even genocide. The selfishness of Americans during this time was obvious. The American people pleaded for the President to pull out of Vietnam while knowing the fate of the…

Selfishness is perceived as bad traits were societies only care for oneself (Selfishness, n.d.). Spencer (1897) explains that egoism takes place before altruism. Spencer (1897) strongly agrees with the evolution theory, saying that the only way for people to survive is to be selfish. It is believe that their own selfish motives are more important for their existence (Spencer 1897). It is because if an individual care or takes care of oneself first, this individual has more chance or surviving (Spencer, 1897). Whereas if people care for others more than themselves, this would lead to death for the individual meaningless care for others which can lead to extinction of species (Spencer, 1897). The less people on earth, the less problems people…

Egoism is the act of behaving self-interestedly, and is perceived as a negative trait even though it can be seen as a tool of survival (Rosenstand, 2003: 131). However, there is an opposing theory, which is altruism. Altruism is defined as a concern for the welfare of others and is considered virtuous (Rosenstand, 2003: 150). We are often made aware of heroes who risk their lives for others and these heroes inspire many. We are encouraged to be altruistic, early in our lives. Nonetheless, one notices how altruist acts usually include rewards, even if it’s just a simple thank you. This leads to questions such as, does true altruism exist, or do people always have a motive as to why they perform altruistically?…

    1. The difference between self-interest and selfishness could perhaps be best described as the difference between a desire to be monetarily successful and voracious greed for every last penny. Self-interest is when someone wants more for themselves, regardless of what it is they desire. A person could want more money, a bigger television, faster computers, or just better health with six pack abs. Selfishness is much more like when someone is willing to do anything, including hurt others, to get what they want. The difference is subtle, but it is there. Now, in terms of a competitive market economy, selfishness will lead to eventual collapse, while self-interest could potentially increase the general good, even if inadvertently. Selfishness is corrupting and businesses that are so will seek to draw as much profit out of their employees and customers as is possible, heedless of economic survival.…

People who want things act selfishly. Characters act selfishly when they want land. Thomas Putnam wants everyone’s land for himself because he is greedy he clearly states that he doesn’t want anyone on his land when he says to Giles and John, “You load one oak of mine and you’ll fight to drag it home”(32). Thomas does not like to share with others, he only takes what he wants, and that happens to be his neighbors land. Thomas acts selfishly in order to obtain the land he desires. Secondly, Characters act selfishly when they want attention. Betty wants attention, she is only a child but she will still act selfishly to get others to pay attention to her. The author describes, “Betty is rising from her bed, a fever in her eyes, and picks up the chant” (48). The fever in Betty’s eyes is her thirst for power; she selfishly picks up the chant because that is exactly what it will give her. Thirdly, Characters act selfishly when they want to attain romance. Abigail acts selfishly because she wants to have a relationship with John Proctor. When John and Abigail are alone, Abigail reveals, “John-I am waitin’ for you every night” (22). Abigail is extremely selfish by wanting John because of the fact that he has a wife. Abigail and John had an affair and even though John is pushing her away, she clearly wants to have her “stallion” again. Therefore, people who want things for themselves act selfishly.…

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, selfishness is an noun meaning “ arising from concern with one's own welfare or advantage in disregard of others” (Merriam-Webster). By this definition, all tyrants are selfish because they rule with their own personal gain in mind and have no interest in their people. This is seen in both in the story Animal Farm by George Orwell and in North Korea. The citizens of each institution live in terror underneath their tyrants: the pig Napoleon in Animal Farm and Kim Jong Un in North Korea. As a result of this selfishness and fear, tyranny is a terrible thing for all people. Because it makes people worry not only about both their own physical condition and starvation but also…

Accordingly, it’s the primary goal of this brief article to differentiate the concepts of self-interest and selfishness: to praise the concept of self-interest as the catalyst of moral action, therefore worthy of admiration; and thus to admonish selfishness as the instigator which often leads to immorality and inconsiderate hedonism. Consequently, containing these two sentiments from one another in order to redeem the term self-interest and to specify its appropriateness becomes an intellectual…

People are selfish by nature, however we have demonstrated times of great sacrifice when such sacrifice is needed. Helping other people is an act most of us perform without even thinking about it. For centuries neighbors have help other neighbors, families have helped other family members and internationally, governments have given other countries’ governments advice, food, medical care, military help or financial support. We live in a country that has always been there for other countries that have needed our help whether they have wanted it or not. Have you ever thought about how selfless Americans are in a time of war or great national tragedy and how selfish we are in times of peace? This might be because in times of peace we are so involved…

There are not enough fingers in the world to count how many times I have heard the phrase “It’s because he is black.” It doesn’t matter if I am in school or even at the mall, I hear this statement, this stereotype. Stereotypes have always existed, but the emphasis of negative stereotypes forced onto the Black Community through different media outlets has put a strain on the Black Community. These negative stereotypes are weapons used by racist people to keep the black community socially and economically oppressed. Phrases like “they are thieves,” “they are violent,” and “they are uneducated” are only a few of the stereotypes used to oppress the Black Community.…
