Selma was a movie released in America in the year 2014. English was the language used because it connected with American history. This movie was admired by many viewers because of its rich details about the struggles African American’s faced during the1960s’. The movie was directed by the very accomplished Ava DuVernay. She is an African American director, film marketer, film distributor, and screenwriter. The film industry is dominated by Caucasian men. It took a lot of fearlessness, on DuVernay’s part, to follow her dream career, considering all of the barriers she had to break down. Her work in Selma granted her to be the first black woman director to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award. Her involvement in Selma also got DuVernay nominated
The main character Martin Luther King Jr. was portrayed by David Oyelowo. A Devout Christian, Oyelowo has stated that he believes God called him to play Rev.
