1. Introduction
Modern society pursues sustainability and the conscious use of raw materials more purposeful and energetic than ever before. More and more, the question arises how to protect the environment in order to keep the planet healthy long term. This problem does not solely concern politicians and parts of the society but also businesses all along. Environmentally conscious management increases the companies standing in society, signals trustworthiness and employees are likely to be better motivated because they actively contribute to environmental preservation. However, sustainability can be very costly because the equipment and machines needs to constantly be up to date in order to have the lowest possible emissions rate.
Due to globalization, free trade areas and, consequently, the growth of international trade it is becoming increasingly important to build an efficient logistics network and to expand existing networks. Competitive and ecologically friendly alternatives modes of transportation are the maritime and rail transport. Even though they are very inexpensive and can transport larger quantities compared to road transport, their range is more limited and cannot be extended without further, expensive effort.
