1. How did the Mughal Empire get its name?

Ans: The Mughal Empire was founded by Zahir-ud-din Muhammad Babur. The term 'Mughal' can be traced to Babur's ancestors- the Mongol chief Chenghiz Khan on his mother's side and the Turco-Mongol chief Timur of central Asia on his father's side.

2. How did Akbar win over Rajput Chiefs? Name one Rajut ruler who resisted Akbar.

Ans: Akbar showed religious tolerance and cleverly won over other rulers,especially powerful chiefs,through marriage alliances and grants of high offices. The Rajput of Mewar,resisted Akbar.

3.Why did Jahangir have Guru Arjun executed?

Ans: Jahangir had Guru Arjun (or Arjan) executed as he was helping Prince khusrau,who had rebelled.

4. What cause revolts during Aurangzeb's reign? Name a few communities that revolted.

Ans: Aureangzeb increased taxes payable by the non-Muslims and permitted the destruction of temples. Aureangzeb faced many revolts such as those of the Bundelas, Sikhs, Jats and Satnamis.

5. What were the duties of a muqaddam and a patwari?

Ans: Village headmen called muqaddams collected land revenue and maintained law and order. Officals called patwaris maintained revenue records.

6. What were watan jagirs?

Ans: Only some regional chiefs,mainly Rajputs,who surrendered were granted watan jagirs,that is, hereditary right over their own territories.

7.What is the meaning of suyurghal? Who usually recived these?

Ans: The emperor granted tax-free lands and the right to collect revenue from such lands to favoured scholars,holy men,religious institutions etc. These lands, called suyurghal,were granted for life.

8. What was Din IIahi?

Ans: Akbar founded a faith called Din IIahi,which was based on universal peace and harmony and borrowed ideas from all major religion.
