Looking back at the way my life has been so far I am both surprised and proud of myself for continuing to push myself to success. Using the fact that I am the child of two high school drop outs as the fuel to my fire. I will be the first in my family to graduate, setting a good example for my two younger sisters. I am the only child of my Father, and my Mother’s oldest daughter. After five years of being raised by a single mother, and having the support of our church, my mother got married and the ability to have one place I called ‘home’ was ruined. My family moved every year, sometimes two times a year since I was roughly five. I have attended a total of fourteen schools, always being ‘the new kid’… knowing I would never have those childhood friends to go back to. I managed to stay positive and keep my grades up, earning me a spot in the Cambridge program at North Marion Middle School, a program that offered Eleventh and Twelfth grade classes while you were in Eighth grade. Later, while my mother and her husband were going through a horrible divorce, my mother, my sisters, and I relocated to Immokalee Florida, where we have been living for the past two years, the longest I’ve ever lived anywhere. During the process of divorce, my stepfather filed for immediate removal of the minor children (my sisters) and was granted custody of my two sisters, five hours north of Immokalee. Currently I attend Immokalee High School, I am the Sport’s Editor of the yearbook club, I am enrolled in AP Literature, and a Dual Enrollment student at ITech. I also plan on playing Lacrosse, and am currently enrolled in multiple online classes. As a senior in high school, I am constantly asked what I want to do after graduation. The question drifted along the edges of my mind, and the answer was always the same. I want to give back to the country that has given me everything. I want to be a U.S Soldier. After speaking to multiple recruiters, I have decided to enlist directly after graduation. Where in the Armed forces I go, depends completely on the score of my ASVAB, which I will be taking in December. As terrifying as it is to let go of our innocence, our childhood, our ability to drift along with wherever the universe takes us, I have come to the realization that the career path I am going towards, is completely worth all the hard work I will need to give to get there.

Throughout my life, I experienced many events that would make most people unable to function socially, emotionally, or academically. Most teenagers would have given up here as the disappointment from both their parents and teachers would have destroyed their hopes for a successful future. However, this anguish became a catalyst for what would become a significant restructuring in both my demeanor towards schoolwork and my perspective on the future. Growing up in Indiantown - with a population of less than 5,000 people, there was little to no chance of development. During middle school, my mother and I moved to Bartow (slightly bigger, with 15k people), with little opportunity for development. After High School, I moved to Orlando with my mother so we could live closer to her job. Thankfully, Orlando (at least now) is ripe with opportunity and growth. In Indiantown, there were several of my mother’s siblings (and their children) living here, as well, but majority of the population were Spanish-speaking and retirees. So, there was little chance to socialize, other than with my relatives. And my mother’s family was anything but role-models; and I didn’t…

Senioritis Senioritis is commonly known around all high schools. According to the Merriam Webster, this term means an ebbing of motivation and effort by school seniors as evidenced by tardiness, absences, and lower grades. Senioritis is also considered a psychotic disorder. This word is not an actual sickness or disease in high school seniors, it’s just laziness because they’re getting close to the end. History…

Fortunately, by the fifth grade my parents were able to rent an apartment nearby our school and had found jobs in multiple Brownsville restaurants. After the move, things became much easier and we were able to have a much simpler life, though we were never able to forget the hardships we experienced and the effort we put into enhancing our lives. Today, I am sure my successes as of now are gratifying my parents as I am in the top 10% of my class, the Co-Captain of the Golden Stars Dance Team, member of the National Honor Society, Piano Club, HOSA, and in TRIO UTRGV talent search program. I attend rigorous AP classes to improve my opportunity to attend a university and have the finest future I can give myself. Although my triumphs may not look like much to most, I can assertively say that the trial of going through difficulty to have a superior future has been overcome with the comfort of focus, strength, and the right set of mind to build a better tomorrow for my family and…

Once you are a senior in high school, there comes a point where the glorified “disease” senioritis comes into the picture. Senioritis is the lack of care people give for school work and grades when one becomes a senior in high school. It’s basically just procrastination to the fullest effect. Some people claim that the disease started back in freshman year, but in reality those people are just really lazy. I believe that people get senioritis when they feel that they don’t need to keep on learning. I believe that the school system kills the drive for students to excel anymore than they have to.…

In high school, we grow so much as people that we tend to forget where we started. This applies to not only our personalities, but our academic abilities as well. I suppose this is obvious, as it is four years of school, but the magnitude of this growth never fails to surprise me. As I looked back at the writing pieces I created in ninth grade, with misplaced commas and awkward wording, all I can think of is how different my writing is today. The poem I wrote was created as a way to track and remember the changes I encountered each year.…

“You’ll never make it,” they all said, my boyfriend, family, teachers, and friends. It was like my life was already figured out for me, as if I didn’t have a say. The message was loud and clear. They all expected me to fail, to settle for a minimum wage paying job, to settle for just a high school diploma. For a while I went around believing that all I could do was the minimum required. But then I realized that I was capable of doing so much more. As time went on I realized that I did not have to live up to other’s low expectations and I started making a name for myself. I knew that studying a little harder for every test, joining clubs, volunteering, and running for leadership positions would later pay off.…

Being a big sister I have always been introduced into the basics of how to take care a children. For my senior project I chose the self-development option where I took a class at WITC on “Intro to Child Care.” The class had a Pass/Fail grading system. I decided to take the class as my senior project to expand my prior knowledge on childcare. Also I took the class to determine if I want to pursue a career in childcare so I would know what colleges to go to and what programs I would need to pursue. The initial goals I had before starting the class were to complete the class, to expand my knowledge and to decide whether or not to pursue childcare as a career.…

The senior project was a challenge simply because the type of research needed was foreign for me. I had researched a few things in past courses but never like this. This project showed me I am not as disciplined as I once was. The senior project has been a revealing process, too. Both in identifying weaknesses as well as strengths. The skill set for attention to detail had gone lax, for me. Which was an area where I could be more attentive. Although, those are areas where I am somewhat weak. I also noticed my strength in assessing the important aspects of an article and then utilizing the information in my writing.…

Have you ever thought about what goes through a little two-year olds head when she has to see multiple doctors? I have. In fact, it is mostly fear. When I was just two and a half years old I became very ill due to asthma symptoms, pneumonia and needing to use a nebulizer. Two x-rays and a CT scan were performed to get to the bottom of my ongoing chest issues. Doctors finally found what was wrong and it was life changing for not only myself but my entire family. I had a mediastinal teratoma (rare noncancerous tumor) located in the center of my chest cavity. The tumor was about the size of a grapefruit that was pressing on my trachea and it could’ve caused my airway to collapse. This would have been fatal for me within seconds, so I needed thoracic surgery as soon as possible. Surgery went extremely well and I would make a full recovery following a stay in the ICU.…
