Global School-based Student Health Survey

Ghana Senior High
2012 Fact Sheet
The 2012 Ghana Senior High GSHS was a school-based survey of students in Grades SHS 1-4, which are typically attended by students aged 13 - 17 years. A two-stage cluster sample design was used to produce data representative of all students in Grades SHS 1-4 in Ghana Senior High. At the first stage, schools were selected with probability proportional to enrollment size. At the second stage, classes were randomly selected and all students in selected classes were eligible to participate.
The Ghana Senior High GSHS measured alcohol use; dietary behaviors; drug use; hygiene; mental health; physical activity; protective factors; sexual behaviors; tobacco use; and violence and unintentional injury. Students self-reported their responses to each question on a computer scanable answer sheet. The school response rate was
96%, the student response rate was 74%, and the overall response rate was 71%. A total of 1984 students participated in the Ghana Senior High GSHS. Prevalence estimates (percentages) and 95% confidence intervals are presented below.

This paper charts a brief history of Ghana’s chronic disease burden over the last five years, focusing on prevalence, risk and illness implications in relation to aging. Two arguments are made. First, chronic diseases in Ghana constitute public health and developmental challenges, requiring the same intellectual and financial commitments afforded to communicable and infectious diseases. Information on the prevalence of chronic disease in Ghana is limited in scope and quality. There is no single source that can be used to describe the effects of ill health implications across the spectrum of disease severity. Administrative data sources such as hospital out-patient’s records from National Health Insurance Scheme, Ghana can be used to assess those aspects of disease that require medical attention. Second, to understand and respond to the multifaceted roots and consequences of chronic diseases, research, interventions and policies have to be informed by multidisciplinary biomedical and social science - collaborations.…

Ghana’s educational system has been hit with series of reforms for the past decade, it is quite obvious that most of them are concerned with the duration (the year interval). Various political parties has added them to their manifestos, preaching it to its masses without thinking about the educational structure itself. One may ask whether these political parties would do as they say, but this has been the tradition since time immemorial. Even the two vibrant political parties in Ghana (NPP, NDC) tried to have a touch on it but the problem still exist. (Sitation)…
