Senior Skip Day
Perfect Senior Skip Day “OMG! We’re going to have a crawfish boil at the park and put on some loud music!” Shrieked a girl in my high school biology class, “Only people with invitations are allowed.” “We’re going to Houston and spending the whole damn day there partying like crazy.” said another guy. The entire class was yelling in excitement. It felt like I was in a loud beehive, people were just buzzing away talking about “Senior Skip Day.” This is the day where senior students plan their own wild celebration of the last days in high school. All seniors have to celebrate this day altogether as a class during school hours. Everyone was aware of this occasion and it was sort of a privilege seniors had. I was sitting in the back of the class with the “Mexican group.” It was quite weird for me because I usually don’t associate myself with one type of race, but I sat there because they were the kindest and funniest people I had ever met in my classes and I was close to about three of them. The “group,” as people liked to call us, consisted of 7 crazy party-animal Mexicans with an exception of a couple of us who stayed sane, or, really, were never allowed to get out.
I looked around to see if anyone was making plans in the back of the room, and for a moment I forgot that they had no school spirit for any event. Since no one was making any plans, so I rested my head on my fist disappointed. “Well, I’ll make my own plans if they won’t do anything,” I thought with a bit of anger.
“Ding Ding Ding.” The bell rang before I could share my ideas with anyone, which frustrated me even more.
After school, my boyfriend, Justin, picked me up to go home, and while sitting down in the car, I was quiet. He could tell I was a little anxious. “What’s wrong, baby?” he asked while trying to tickle me to get a smile out of me. “Well!” I blurted “No one in my group of friends wants to do anything for ‘Senior Skip Day,’ typical non-school spirited Mexicans.” “Don’t

Michele Serros was born in 1966 in Oxnard, California. Serros was raised in Hispanic Community. Historically, Oxnard was originally inhabited by Native Americans the same location in which the story is being portrayed and also during Serros late childhood and mid-teens because, it was during the time when Radio frequencies named Citizens Band were popular. The narrator’s ancestors are obviously Indians because she explains how her nose looked “less Indian” with time because of her repeatedly squeezing her nose. This sort of action makes me believe that she is self-conscious about her appearance and how others may see her. She also describes her nose as hideous, less Californian. I can relate to her though because who doesn’t want to look beautiful? Who doesn’t want to be socially accepted? I personally don’t like my height or body shape and I feel that others see the same. Everyone has an image or idea on how one must look and how one must live such as perfect height, hair, eyes, weight, perfect parents with the prettiest house and the narrator believes that her best friend Terri had all these features. The girl looked up to Terri and loved going over to the house by how she described her feelings every time she arrived at Terri’s house and how she felt when she found out Terri’s father left her mother for another woman by saying “Who’d wanna leave a house that smelled like a pine forest and always had pudding pops in the freezer” (Pg.32)…

    Yokeman Monologue

Or maybe I'm trying to get you to think like me, hee hee hee. Is it a little jeuvinille to write out laughter like that? I wonder if my editor is going to make me omit that? Anyway, it's the last day of school. Guru, Becky, Carlton, and I were sitting in the usual spot outside the cafeteria. A brick wall that's actually an elevated plot of grass, with a huge willow tree in the center to provide us with much needed shade during these notorious hot days, and considering this is Arizona, shade is almost considered a luxury around these parts. We were staring at the large clock at the north end of the campus, waiting for the little hand and to strike twelve. Last day of school was a half day mind you. Some of the students are already cramming themselves to the outer gates nearing the bus yards, the students who were "spoiled" enough to have cars, were already in them with engines revving and itching to gas it out of here. My friends were talking a little about what we plan on doing after this, we talked about how we will keep in touch, keep in mind in a small town like Yokeman we were about ten years behind the times so internet was this expensive new toy that needed a dial-up modem, before social media became the norm. Guru was already talking about going to college, already found a full time job doing construction work in his grandfather's employ. He laments it, as he believes he doesn't have the proper physique for manual labor, and considering the housing market was crashing fast he's nervous about how long it would last. Becky was fortunate enough to get a full scholarship the the community college thanks to her good grades and volunteer work at the nursing homes. At least the local paper acknowledged her hard work, unlike the faculty here at this school who…

    Spirit Day Research Paper

A few years ago, I was just a freshman, who was intrigued by every aspect of my school. I was surprised to see that there is a hang out place called Senior hills, and that’s where most of the seniors hang out. There was also a specific room where most musically gifted kids hang out called the Band room. And lastly there is A quad, where kids love the color black, and could spend all day reading manga. As I wonder where I belong to in this huge melting pot, I met a group of older girls in my geometry class, Jordyn, Hannah, and Ally. Jordyn insisted that I should hang out with them, since I’m new and need guidance. They showed me to my classes, and taught me about spirit weeks and rally days. They said we should use spirit days to show school unity and look cuter than usual. One day, during lunch, when we were all dressed up as hippies in our trendy bohemian clothes chit chatting about what to wear for tomorrow spirit…

“I think it was a good idea, but at the same time, it just seemed weird because I know a lot of other kids from other schools didn’t seem to show up. I think it was a good idea [to invite other schools] because you get to know other people, but at the same time, I feel like it’s more idealised in your head than it is when it’s actually executed because you’re not going to socialise with the kids you don’t know very well and have never seen… It was fun, but there wasn’t anything super special about it.”…

After going over everything on the agenda, our Link Crew coordinator announced we had something we needed to celebrate. She read a letter from one of our guidance counselors at the school. In the letter she described how a parent emailed her a few weeks before school started to tell her that her daughter has anxiety when it comes to new beginnings. She said her daughter stayed home from school her first week of middle school because she was so nervous. However, her first day of high school was a magical experience for her. The parent explained how her daughter was bouncing in her seat at the dinner table describing what a great day she had. Our Link Crew director announced whose group she was in, and sure enough, it was…

After settling down, my mother decided it was time to enroll my sisters and me into school. My mother asked my Aunt Julia and Uncle Fernando what my sisters and I need to enroll into school but since my aunt and uncle did not have any children, they were unable to tell my parents the information we would need. As my mother, my sisters and I walked into the school we could notice all the “gringos” looking at us in a weird way (looking at us like we did not belong there). My mother can right away tell that there was something wrong that we would not be accepted into that school. My mom was correct, as we entered the office the school secretary told my mother that we were not welcomed there and that if she wanted to enroll us into school it needed to be in a segregated Mexican school.…
