Claes Oldenburg, “I Am for an Art,” 1961 Analysis
In Kristine Stiles book, Theories and Documents of Contemporary Art: A Sourcebook of Artists’ Writing, 2nd edition we read about many different writings and ideas of different artists. We are able to look at what ideas these artists had while doing there artworks. We see these different perspectives and are able to get better ideas o what goes through the minds of artists and how they persevere society and the culture around them. Once you begin to read and look at these artists works you actual get a better understanding of why they do, what they do. One of the reading that we have done from this book which really stood out for me was Claes Oldenburg, “I Am for an Art,” 1961 [Stiles, pp. 335-337]1. While reading this you are able to see a different perspective of looking at what art is and what type of art is actually accepted by society. Oldenburg himself was a pop artist and has many famous sculptures that are being displayed at museums and in major cities. In this text written by Oldenburg he talks about seeing different, day to day things as art. It drew me in very quickly because it made me think about the so called things we call art actually art. Oldenburg in this text tries to prove that anything can be made into or be perceived as art. After reading ‘I am for an Art’ you are able to understand why Oldenburg did the works that he did. You are able to understand the things he perceives as art. While reading I would keep on drawing a picture of each thing he talked about in my mind and try to look at it in a artistic fashion. In one of the lines he says I am for the art of the washing machine and know every time I look at my washing machine I see that that it’s a piece of art which makes its own artistic sound and has its own artistic purpose.
