Abstract
For this assignment I must describe what sensory adaptation is and to explain the concept of it. We were giving four experiments and out of the four to pick three that we need to describe what sensory adaptation was evident in each.
Adaptation
Sandpaper
The first experiment is on the coarseness of the sandpaper, I rated the sandpaper a 4 on a scale of 1 being very soft and 7 being very coarse. I gave it a 4 on my right and on my left I gave it a full 7 both sides had different reactions to the sensations felt so I had to give two different scores. This score was given after a minute or more of rubbing my index fingers on both hands three times. The left finger had a sensation of being tickled lightly with a toothpick that became very irritating on the right I felt that same sensation but barely it was almost like I had little knowledge it was being done on that hand had I not being paying attention and someone else was doing the experimenting without my knowledge I would not know it was being done.
Sugar …show more content…
The second experiment done was on sugar I was asked to get two cups of water put sugar in one and leave the other without sugar.
Swish the water around in my mouth for several seconds without swallowing. I did this and based on what I experienced it was not a shock but the regular water still tasted sweet just as sweet as the regular the sweet water and this was after I had done it several times. As a matter of fact even after the experiment was done I still had the sweetness on the tip of my tongue not in the back almost like I licked on sugar instead of swishing
it.
Bowls
The third experiment was done on three bowls one with hot water, one with cold water, and one with lukewarm water. The left hand goes into the hot water; the right goes into the cold water for about three minutes take your hands and submerse them into the lukewarm water. What I decided to do one better by rotating the experiment using the right hand for the hot and left cold. What I felt when I initially did the experiment was that after I took my hands out of the water and placed them into the lukewarm water the left hand felt as if I were holding an ice cube I had a cold chill going up and down my arm the feeling you get coming in the house in the winter time and trying to warm up and my hand began to itch. When I rotated the water to opposite hands the sensation was the same. But after the experiment I continued to feel colder on the left.
In conclusion my reaction to the experiments were not shocking a little weird but not shocking you would think that after tasting something sweet then going in right behind it with plain water it would have rinsed the taste away but it did not. I am a little confused as to why my arm is still cold on the left even after the experiment is over and why the sand paper affected my left index finger more. With this being said I must say that my left side of my body is more sensitive to sensory adaptations than my right.
