Sensory Loss Case Studies
This supplement is a record of my actions in this investigation.

On August 8, 2016, I was assigned this case to follow up. This investigation involves Ms. Gabriella Villatoro a 16 year old hearing impaired city resident. Gabriella attends a special needs school in the District of Columbia. I contacted Jose Villatoro, Gabriella’s father. Jose reported that his daughter is doing better and has had no more issues involving his daughter Gabriella.

I asked permission to meet with his daughter reference the runaway incident of August 5, 2016, Jose Villatoro permitted me to meet with Gabriella and verified the apartment # is 22 which is located in the rear of 5743 Harwich Court. I located the residence and Gabriella’s mother and grandmother were home. I identified myself and invited in to meet with Gabriella. I was informed of Gabriella’s impairment and used the little sign language I am familiar with and she also responded by writing her thoughts down on paper.

Gabriela wrote that she is not afraid of being home and is very safe there. She indicated she has people to talk to at home and school too. Gabriella denied any drug or alcohol use and denied any association or affiliation with any gangs or their

Jennifer was hospitalized for three months, with congenital heart disease and was in need of heart surgery. At the time of this court case, Sean G. Duffy was a hearing-impaired inmate at the Washington State Reformatory (WSR) in Monroe, Washington. On July 23, 1992, Duffy was charged with indecent exposure by a corrections officer and placed into segregation following the incident. The next day, a notice of a hearing and infraction was attempted to be served, however, Duffy refused to accept it until an interpreter was able to be located. On July 28, 1992, WSR’s Disciplinary Court Clerk Peggy Williams, who knew some sign language, arranged a meeting between herself and Duffy. Duffy refused yet again claiming that Williams was not certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and that his ability to communicate with her was not…

Sensory integration therapy improves the daily function of autistic children with sensory processing disorders. For most parents, the goal of rearing a child is for them to become self-sufficient. This goal is even harder to attain when the child is dealing with sensory processing disorder. The diagnosis process of a hearing loss often begins with the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS). Hearing loss is considered one of the most common disabilities in the United States (Jackson, Traub, & Turnbull, 2008). Before the UNHS was widely implemented in 1990s, physicians, medical personnel, and teachers were responsible for detecting hearing loss through a long referral process (Fitzpatrick et al., 2008). Now, the UNHS helps identify children with hearing loss as infants to improve their learning and communication outcomes (Fitzpatrick, Angus, Durieuz-Smith, Graham, & Coyle, 2008). After children are screened, follow-up assessments are given and early intervention services are provided to the child (Fitzpatrick…

The first step in supporting people with a sensory impairment appropriately is to identify them. Local authorities should put in place a process to understand the prevalence of sensory loss in their populations to inform commissioning and market shaping functions. For my field observation assignment, I went to the Mount Ida Preschool that is administrated by Randi Carr. Mrs. Carr was very welcoming and excited for me to come and observe. I went on September 20th and 27th, 2016. The preschool has two classrooms on each side of the building, one for three year olds and the other for four year olds. I sat in on a different class on both days. There were only two children who received special education services, but there was also a third that was being prepared to be tested for services. There is a special education teacher that travels to all three school districts in Montgomery County, but she unfortunately could not be there on either day. There was a speech-pathologist that works with the De Queen-Mena…
