Separation of Mixtures Mixtures exist in many forms in the world, and if it were not for methods of separation, many of these substances would be meaningless to us. Separating mixtures is extremely important to human lives; for example, many people filter water so that it is safe for drinking. Mixtures contain two or more substances that are not in a fixed ratio, and while some mixtures, such as concrete, are useful, others including salt water, are not as useful to us. Filtration, distillation, paper chromatography, and centrifugation are just a few methods used for separating mixtures. There are many methods of separating mixtures. A more commonly known and used method is filtration. Filtration separates mixtures using filter paper, …show more content…
For example, in a separation of a color of marker, the color that travels the fastest up the paper has the least absorption to the paper and the color that travels the slowest up the paper has the most absorption the the paper. An example of paper chromatography being used is demonstrated in seeing the various colors that make up a blue sharpie. When the water travels up the paper through capillary action, the components of the blue mark will move according to how attracted they are to the paper. The results are blue and purple that make up the blue color of the sharpie. Paper chromatography is useful in crime scenes to determine who the culprit is. Another example of paper chromatography is determining the pigments that are found in plants. The various pigments travel up the paper and display different colors by which they are identified. Centrifugation separates mixtures according to density. A centrifuge is used to spin the substance at a high force and separate the mixture into heavier being on the bottom and lighter appearing on the top. The components of blood are separated by using a centrifuge; the plasma is separated from the red blood cells so that the red blood cells can be used. In order to produce skim milk, the milk that comes directly from cows is spun in a centrifuge to extract the fat. In this laboratory experiment, I attempted to experimentally verify that the components of a heterogeneous mixture containing salt, sand, and benzoic acid can be separated using the separate components’ solubility properties (ability to dissolve in water). Because it is known that organic compounds (such as benzoic acid) are very soluble in organic solvents, a hexane: ethanol mixture was used to dissolve the acid. Also, because it is known that sodium chloride dissolves in water, water was used to dissolve the NaCl. Along with separating the components of a heterogeneous mixture, the percent recovery of each substance was calculated using the formula: % recovery = (final mass)/(inital mass) x 100. The percent recovery is the amount of substance that was recovered from before the experiment to after the experiment. The word chromatography comes from the Greek words, "chroma," meaning color, and "grafein," meaning to write.
