    By separating chemicals out of a mixture and purifying them through sublimation and recrystiliation, changes in the substances physical properties can be shown. A salicylic acid-naphthalene mixture was mixed together with diethyl ether and saturated sodium bicarbonate. Two layers separated and were extracted after acidifying with HCl. This precipitated the crude salicylic acid. The left over mixture was combined with water and the two layers separated where crude naphthalene was recovered. Sublimation was used to purify the naphthalene. Sublimation is the process when a solid evaporates from a warm surface and condenses as a solid on a cold surface. The crude naphthalene had a melting point range of 85°-90° C while the 35.4% yield of pure naphthalene had a melting point range of 70°-76° C. Recrystallization was used to purify the salicylic acid. Recrystallization is the process of dissolving the original solid in a hot solvent and then allowing the solution to cool to let the solid crystallize again. The crude salicylic acid had a melting point range of 150°-153° C while the pure salicylic acid had a melting point range of 155°-158° C.     The masses for the benzoic acid, 4- chloroaniline and naphthalene are as follow 2.890 g, 3.024 g and 3.036 g. The masses for the three products demonstrates that there was almost an equal amount of product that was extracted for each compound. The beginning mixture was 3.5 g which had equal amounts of the three compounds. Because the masses were close in range and they yield an average of 84.8 % percent recovery the experiment proved to be an effective technique of separating an organic acid, a base and a neutral compound. There could have been possible sources of error that occurred during the extraction process of the compounds because the percent recoveries were less than 100 %. Some possible reasons for a lower percent recovery are not properly drawing off the lower layers and extracting part of the top layer or leaving excess precipitate in the vacuum filter. Once the products were collected and weighed the melting point of each compound was recorded. The melting points for the acid, base and neutral compound are 100ºC, 81ºC and 75ºC. The melting point results are somewhat consistent with the literature values because the benzoic acid was lower than 122ºC while the 4-chloroaniline was within the range of 68-71ºC and the naphthalene was 5ºC lower than the expected melting point of 80ºC. A possible reason for the inconsistencies are the point at which the product turned to liquid was probably not properly…

    A commonly used method of separating a mixture of organic compounds is known as liquid-liquid extraction. Most reactions of organic compounds require extraction at some stage of product purification. In this experiment you will use extraction techniques to separate a mixture of an organic acid, a base, and a neutral compound. Organic acids and bases can be separated from each other and from neutral compounds by extraction using aqueous solutions of different pH values. Most organic carboxylic acids are insoluble or slightly soluble in water, but these compounds are highly soluble in dilute aqueous sodium hydroxide because the acid is deprotonated by the base producing the sodium carboxylate salt. RCO2H(solv) + OH–(aq) → RCO2–(aq) + H2O(aq) The carboxylic acid can be selectively isolated by dissolving the mixture in an organic solvent that is immiscible with water, and then extracting the solution with sodium hydroxide. The basic aqueous solution containing the carboxylate salt is acidified, causing the sodium carboxylate salt to convert back to the carboxylic acid, which is not water soluble. The acid will precipitate from the solution, as shown here. RCO2–(aq) + H+(aq) → RCO2H(s) Organic bases (e.g., amines) that are insoluble in water can be separated by extraction with hydrochloric acid. Addition of HCl to the amine produces the corresponding ammonium salt, which is soluble in water but not in organic solvents. The amine can be recovered from the aqueous solution by treatment with a base, converting the ammonium salt back to the amine. The amine is not water-soluble and will precipitate, as shown here. Using your understanding of these properties, separation of a mixture containing a carboxylic acid, an amine, and a neutral compound can be carried out via sequential acid and base extractions.     The objective of this experiment was to extract the pigments from spinach leaves, perform Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) on the spinach leaf extract, and then determine the best solvent mixture to use to separate the pigments in the extract.
