?Resist Temptation?
James 1:13-18
The giant sequoia bark resists...
Sequoia bark is fibrous, furrowed, and may be 90 cm (3.0 ft) thick at the base of the columnar trunk.
The cinnamon-colored bark of a Giant Sequoia contains one of its greatest secrets to success. The cinnamon color comes from ?tannic acid? which is found in the bark and the wood of a Sequoia, and this is why Sequoias are often called?Redwoods?. Although many trees contain some tannin, the high content in Sequoias is largely responsible for the tree?s resistance to disease, insect infestation and fire.
In James 1:1-12 we saw how we can let trial help us grow as Christians. But many people fall in this process.

16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.
17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
18 In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.
Three facts to consider if we are to resist temptation?
Consider God?s Judgement (vs 13-16)
13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.
15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.
16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.
This is a negative approach, but it is an important one. James said, ?Look ahead and see where sin ends?death!? Do not blame God for temptation. He is too holy to be tempted, and He is too loving to tempt others.

word of truth. Cf. John 17:17. Scripture, or the Word of God. He regenerates sinners through the power of that Word
Hebrews 4:12 (NASB)
12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
firstfruits. This was originally an OT expression referring to the first and best harvest crops, which God expected as an offering (cf. Ex. 23:19; Lev. 23:9-14; Deut. 26:1-19). Giving God that initial crop was an act of faith that He would fulfill His promise of a full harvest to come (Prov. 3:9, 10).
In the same way, Christians are the first evidence of God?s new creation that is to come (cf. 2 Pet. 3:10-13) and enjoy presently in their new life a foretaste of future glory that is promised to those that are adopted by God into his family through Jesus.
