was always an emotional time for Seraphina when a new girl was found in the willow tree so I didn’t question it.
I decided to meet up with Seraphina at the library. I was interested to see what she could find there. She was normally able to find something interesting. Later that day, I grabbed my green bike and rode it to the library. When I entered, I saw Seraphina in the corner staring intensely at the bulletin board.
The bulletin board was relatively empty. There were a few missing persons signs for Lauren. Those signs were everywhere around town, it was hard to go anywhere without seeing Lauren’s brunette curls and small figure. There also was a sign from the beginning of summer mentioning that the willow tree was going to be cut down. A newer sign had been placed over it moving up the day it was to be cut down.
“They shouldn’t be doing that.” Seraphina murmured. “The ghost would kill us Angela.”
“What ghost?” I asked, confused.
“The ghost of the willow tree.” she replied not tearing her eyes away from the signs. While never breaking her gaze she slid a book towards me. The book was open to a page about a girl who had been hung in the tree after trying to protect it after some people in the town had deemed it bad luck and was going to tear it down. As a sign to all others who opposed it, she had hung in the willow tree for twenty days. Mysteriously, all those who had planned to cut it down had died and no one attempted to cut down the willow tree after that.
“Wow!
That is weird!” I exclaimed. I pushed the book back towards Seraphina. She didn’t respond so I decided to go home. As I went through the town, it seemed eerily empty as I did. The town seemed too quiet, but I didn’t think much of it until I returned home. My phone was ringing off the hook.
“Hello? I answered.
“Hey Angela, this is Seraphina. Get down to the willow tree as fast as you can.” I heard Seraphina quickly say obviously very distressed.
“Uh… I’ll be right there.” I replied and hung up the phone. I wondered what could possibly be happening that was so urgent. As I hopped onto my bike, I was thinking about what could be in the willow tree. I rode my bike down towards the willow as fast as possible; my raven hair was getting into my eyes I didn’t even see what had happened until I reached Seraphina. When I saw it, I couldn’t believe my eyes
Many people were standing around the tree pointing and whispering. I was confused at first, and then I realized Helena was hanging from the willow tree. She had a sign draped around her neck. It read, “I’m sorry, but I can’t kill anyone else.”
“I can’t believe all the rumors were actually true.” I whispered to Seraphina.
“Neither can I! I can’t believe she did this!” Seraphina
responded.
