backyard, but they never reported the animal cruelty. If they would have given a statement to police when they first spotted the animal cruelty, maybe Jeffrey Dahmer would have been treated for his antisocial personality and at least 17 people would not have been brutally murdered. If people would speak up and not be a bystander when seeing abnormal behavior, they can not only ensure the safety of their community but allow for people who have the desire to kill get treatment they so desperately need. In most cases with serial killers, they have symptoms of antisocial personality disorder, a mental health disorder where one has complete disregard for others. This personality disorder can be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain as well as a traumatizing childhood where the child is raised in an abusive or unloving family. Many people do not understand why one could behave in such a cruel way because they are unaware there is a certain component driving them to this point; whether it be nurture or nature. If we educate students and the rest of the community on what drives a serial killer, many will have a better understanding why they need to get help. Identifying strange behavior and understanding the mental aspect of a serial killer is crucial to protect our community.
