Alkyl halides are compounds in which a halogen atom replaces a hydrogen atom of an alkane. Alkyl halides are classified as primary, secondary or tertiary depending on the number of alkyl substituents directly attached to the carbon attached to the halogen atom. The purpose of this lab was to properly prepare t-butyl chloride from t-butyl-alcohol in a concentrated hydrochloric acid. The reaction occurs through a nucleophilic substitution, which is when a nucleophile replaces the leaving group in the substrate. In this lab, the hydroxyl group of t-butyl alcohol is replaced by a chlorine atom. The reaction proceeds through an SN1 mechanism (Weldegirma 38-41).…

In the chapter “The Sound of Sirens” in the book The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, is such a strong chapter filled with emotions. Max (a hidden jew) has been hiding from the Nazis in Liesel’s basement for the past twenty-two months. In the middle of the night, sirens go off warning the town to evacuate into bomb shelters. As Liesel and her family scramble with fear, they left Max behind, so they do not get caught for hiding a jew in their house. For Max, he is not allowed to leave the basement because people might see him in the widow. “There were stars,” he said. “They burned my eyes.” While the whole town has evacuated, my prediction was that Max walked upstairs knowing no one would see him, and looked outside for the first time in years. The…

For centuries, society has shaped these abstract ideas of what happiness means and how one could achieve happiness in their lives. However, in order to even understand what actions could lead to one’s happiness, one must be able to understand the definition of happiness itself. Having read Charles Dicken’s book Great Expectations, happiness persists as a pleasure or sense of a meaningful and rich psychosocial integration in a person’s understanding of himself or herself.…

Okay, confession time The Afterlife of Holly Chase is my first Cynthia Hand book. I am aware of how much love her writing gets like with the Unearthly series or even with her work on My Lady Jane however I wasn't really enticed to pick up one her books until I read the synopsis for The Afterlife of Holly Chase. I adore Christmas as a holiday and a modern YA retelling of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol sounded perfect to me!…

Edwin Morgan’s poem ‘trio’ is about a moment where Morgan saw a man and two girls walking in Glasgow, down Buchanan Street in the cold at Christmas time. In the poem Morgan uses different poetic techniques like his specific word choice clever punctuation to show his emotions about this moment and how memorable it was. He also uses techniques like figurative language, not just to tell us about his experience but to also explain a deeper comment about life which is that no matter how bad things get you can always find a moment of clarity and peace and that the happiness makes all our troubles no longer frightening. Obscurity is a recurring motif in the story. Silko uses it to show how blurred the lines of culture can really become. “The curtains were heavy, and the light from within faintly penetrated…” (Silko 2) is an example of a quote that features the motif. It showcases that because there wasn’t sufficient lighting it was hard to see, which is a metaphorical way of saying that a clear decision couldn’t be made. It was unclear whether giving the natives the holy water was right or wrong in the priest mind and this quote highlighted that fact. Another quote is “They were nearly hidden by the red blanket,” (Silko 2). It is an example of obscurity because the blanket is blocking the view of Teofilo and his moccasins which can be interpreted as the culture itself being hidden. Examples of the motif of obscurity can be found in many parts of the short story.…

Although many early critics persisted that his works are “shapeless” , many critics today do not agree with that idea. Modern- day critics, now see Dickens novels as brilliant and complex “denunciations of the bourgeois society that corrupts its members.” (Draper 895). Charles had the ability to express himself through words and plays.…

Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812. Dickens was born at the height of the Industrial Revolution, a time which brought great change to Victorian society. Population in urban areas (London's, in particular) soared. The overpopulation led to a lack of employment; soon poverty and crime increased. In response, the Poor Laws were put into effect. The Poor Laws established baby farms and workhouses to provide aid for those in poverty, and those who could not find work. Rather than provide money or pay in a form of welfare, they provided food and housing. As a child, Dickens experienced the hardships of poverty and neglect of aid that he would write about in his works later in his life. Charles Dickens strongly disagreed with the…
