The Sermon on the Mount is the collection of teachings from Jesus given to his disciples and possibly great crowds, according to Matthew 8:1. Jesus went up into the mountains followed by his disciples after seeing great crowds of people. It is not said when the crowds of people came to listen to Jesus’ teachings, but they were there for some amount of time to hear his sermons.
Jesus begins his preaching to his disciples with blessing those who are weaker, poorer, but are pure in their heart and they will find the kingdom of heaven. One way to view this is as a symbol of purity towards God. To be among God and named as great in his kingdom you must follow all of his commandments and follow his footsteps. If you do not follow his commandments or rules and stray a path away from God, then you will be named less pure. Another example of how Jesus’ sermon represents compassion and people coming together is in Matthew 5:38 and 42. He says that his people have heard an eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, which was part of the conventional wisdom during their time.
