Leadership can be defined as a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential. All leaders essentially strive to complete the same tasks: provide direction, set goals, make a vision, build a positive environment, instill values, motivate, resolve conflict, and teach. James Kouzes and Barry Posner (2002) developed a survey that asked people which characteristics of leaders they look for, admire and would willingly follow. The results of the study showed that people preferred the following characteristics: honest,…

The most interesting part of the book that I reflect on is chapter 3 on the model, because it uses the paradigm shift (upside down pyramid symbolizes the servant leadership model according to, Hunter) concerning change in environment, such as doing things in a different way to change your life and meet goals. Hunter uses leadership, authority, service & sacrifice, love and will as the essential influences to align your behavior to influences with intentions and actions to lead with will power of loving what you do.…

Fundamentally, servant leadership entails leaders being servants first. It starts off with a natural feeling that one wants to serve, and goes beyond one’s self interest, where leaders are genuinely concerned about serving their followers. Further, it also involves leaders not using their power to get things done but instead try to persuade and convince their followers. In this way, followers support their leaders and are motivated to become the very best they can become (Dierendonck, 2011). Indeed, servant leaders do care about the development of their employees and even share power.…

We all have the choice to lead or not. So the question becomes: Why does someone choose to lead? I believe the answer is, fundamentally, that they believe strongly enough in something that they want to take action and are willing to take on the responsibility of being a leader. Such is the case for me with regards to teaching. When I was young I simply wanted to be led. As I matured, however, opportunities to assume leadership roles presented themselves and, with support from my peers and mentors, I found myself taking them on and have grown to enjoy being a leader and helping those around me succeed.…

A good leader has great vision. He knows where he wants to go and he knows how to motivate people to believe in the same vision he has for his group and life. He views things as what they could be and not what they are. A good leader is a very passionate person. He is intensely obsessed in whatever he is focused on. He also has compassion for his fellows. While he has goals to accomplish, he consistently cares for the individuals that support him. A good leader is not a selfish individual only thinking about his wants and needs. Also, a good leader is determined in attaining his goals. It is undeniably true that the key to leadership is accomplishing the tasks at hand while building relationships.…

The over-arcing theme for each of the leader’s view of servant leadership is that servant leadership is about getting the focus off self and into a focus on stewardship through guidance, with attention, intention, awareness – of self and others – with a large dose of serving versus being served as a leader.…

The predominant worldview of leadership is that it is an opportunity to tell others what to do, and to control outcomes for personal gain or reputation enhancement. I do not share this view. I believe all leadership boils down to one word; influence. True leaders, those that serve others, are people who have a clear vision of what the future will be like and then work cooperatively with others to see and move toward a shared future. This is the essence of the leadership style that Jesus Christ modeled for us. He showed us a great vision for our future and then works intimately in our lives to help us on our journey toward that vision.…

The basis of servant leadership is instilling the organizations vision in your people and assisting them to succeed. Servant leaders are motivated to help others reach their goals. Servant leaders lead with compassion. They are not self centered or driven to move up the ladder. They believe their sole responsibility is to improve the organization by giving of themselves to the front line employees because they are the people who will make the company successful (Ken Blachard Companies, 2010) This giving includes time, energy, empowerment, backing decisions, encouragement, and guidance. Servant leaders are humble and are not worried about feeding their egos. They focus on listening to their employees and developing them. They believe their team is the reason for their success and the team is what makes the company succeed.…
