Service Learning Reflection
Service Learning Reflection #2 According to my site coordinator, she stated that “The ideal social issue for the community service for my children would be more funding to actually implement a more home like atmosphere. For many of my children, this is their second home. I have my teens all eat at a table, for most of them this was a new concept. Teaching them etiquette and manners are very important factors. I've had them since they were in kinder or first grade. Most have moved from the area but they still come here to be at the club. They always say it is their home. Although, at times I do not have enough funding to do the programing, excursions, or events, I would like to do with them. Nevertheless, I do not let this stop me. I just …show more content…
The “ideal service program” would be to improve the social issue and achieve this is to make the club free for everyone to join. The club’s goal is to provide a fun and safe environment for students to go to when their parents cannot pick them up after school. Their parents are usually busy at work and cannot pick their children up; therefore, they stay there until the club close. The site coordinator is like a parent to them. She said it makes her feel accomplish because the students feel comfortable to talk to her, tell her all their problems, and appreciate everything she do for them. The Boys and Girls club has a friendly atmosphere because all the staff work together and make sure the students feel safe …show more content…
It was great experienced because they understood what I taught them. I used my knowledge from Math 122 which is teaching kids how to do Math. I taught them different ways that they can approach the problem. I volunteered a total of 3 hours at the Boys and Girls club this month. I did one and a half hour one day and one and a half hour another day. This is a good method to use because I have more energy when helping the kids with their homework and I get to learn different things every day.
I believe my service has made a difference at this site because they feel more happy when adult care about them and listen to their problems. The Boys and Girls club is a nonprofit club so they cannot afford a lot of employees. I believe I made a difference for the social problem because I helped these students understand the materials they supposed to learn in class. This experience was eye opening because seeing how happy the kids understand something made me feel like I did a good job teaching

I imagined it would be five or six students per advisor. The Club was also smaller than I expected and located right next to an elementary school. I believe that in Las Vegas they should encourage young adults to volunteer to help their local community. I would also like to suggest building more Boys and Girls Club or expanding the current facilities to help have more availability to parents and their children. It broadened my understanding of the Boys and Girls Club because it was amazing volunteer and help give back to my community. It help the parents, children, and workers…

I am part of the National Charity League, a Mother / Daughter organization formed to do charity work throughout Fairfield County to benefit others who don’t have as much as we do. We make dinner for the Gillespie Center, babysit at Bacharach Houses, homes owned by the town to help educate women with children, and so much more. However, out of all the philanthropies that I have been a part of throughout the years, the most influential experience for me has been tutoring children at the Caroline House in Bridgeport.…

Participation in a club is seen as a part of a well-rounded person, and teenagers are told when they are applying for college that they will look more appealing if they have participated in many community changing clubs. As people get older they are asked to participate in a clubs ranging from parent-student clubs or book clubs. A club represents a way to enjoy oneself and work outside of one’s profession; it is known as an activity of high esteem. People who participate in clubs are often seen as people who have good time management and a big heart. Many clubs promote volunteer work, team activities, leadership, and help foster morality as well as good choices that will benefit a whole community. One of the specific reasons that clubs are seen as a positive part of our culture is because all school clubs consist of administration approved activities, and because of this it doesn’t allow for a negative club to be created. Clubs can only exist if apart of one of the following categories: fundraising, community service, career interest and interpersonal dynamic. Because of this the word “club” will never be associated with anything other than a group of people who want to divulge themselves into a hobby or service project. Clubs originated in the Victorian times in Britain, functioning as a place for men to attend lectures and participate in recreational activities. Over time they developed as a part of women’s culture (book club, sewing club, cooking club). This was especially true throughout times when women were supposed to be only the care takers of the house and children, as well as social with other mothers. Since then they have developed a connotation that pushes children and adults to be progressive, have a hobby outside of work, and enjoy themselves while (most of the time) helping…

To this learner that was the most valuable learning experiences every. My Instructor, help open up our minds and push us to answer questions that we might not have thought about, that called for us to do additional research to gain a better understanding of our research, and this learners classmates help to make the experience more of and enjoyment than a pain. They were able to do this by helping this learner feel ok about her long drawn out reports. Every time this learner thought she missed the point for the discussion, they help me to feel reassure that I was on the right track. They added to this learner report my interjecting their thoughts, they were polite and they examine this learner’s work. That to this learner is the most valuable experience a student can ever have, and it definitely will help in the professional world. Thank you Dr. Conis and…

During my semester in Nature of the Learner I was placed in a second grade classroom at Johnson Street Elementary. This was a global studies school. I was very hesitant on my first day of going into the school. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I was excited to be in the classroom because second grade was my favorite age group to work with. During this placement I assumed that I would help out the kids within the class but I didn’t. My teacher had me help out this one little guy every week. I was able to help him with his writing and math. I enjoyed doing that but that left me with about five minutes in the actual classroom to observe. During this short amount of time I would walk around the room and ask the children if they needed help.…

The first service learning project I completed was in 2006 which was a participation in tutoring a year six student in the Aquinas College junior school. This tutoring was during winter. After the first week I found it difficult to complete three sport trainings a week (1 in Melville), an after school guitar lesson, a hockey game on Friday nights plus the tutoring program, I thought I was going to have to stop the tutoring and complete service learning in a different area. But after the first week of tutoring I found that tutoring became a priority, I felt that Ricardo found the tutoring much help and seemed to benefit from it. I finished the tutoring program without missing one session.…

After snack time it was naptime. During naptime I continued to talk with the teachers and I learned more about what it meant to be a teacher. We talked about how some people viewed teaching p-k and kindergartener as babysitting when in fact it’s the exact opposite It opened my eyes because I learned that you really have to be energetic and watch the kids closely do to their age. Once the children woke up from their cute nappy time, they played again for 15-20 minutes to fully wake up and afterwards have lunch. After lunch, they reflected on what they did that day and went to recess until their parents picked them up at 2:30.…

I am currently completing my service learning at Martin Luther King Elementary School working with children ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade in an after school program. This program provides the children with a safe and comforting place to do their homework, hangout with their friends, and get a snack. Since I am just getting to know these children I do not know everything about them and their background, so I do not have a lot of examples that relate back to the class work we do. In class I feel as if a lot of the material we focus on relates back to the parents, home life, and how they have been raised thus far. I only see them once a week, so I cannot make judgments regarding their course of development and influences that have left impacts on their life. The two examples that I have noticed that we have covered in class include Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory and The Ecological Systems Theory. I have noticed elements of the Sociocultural Theory in the children’s dialogue. Considering their age the children have a very advanced dialogue with rather colorful language. Personally, I was not even familiar with some of these words that Kindergarteners and 1st graders are expressing. I think this has to do with the culture they were raised and possibly the community. I think that the Kindergarteners at the school pick up on language that is used by the older kids and then they start to say it. Although teachers and administrators try their best to stop the kids from using bad language and reprimanding them when they do I feel as if the colorful language they have come to know is forever imbedded in their brain. I think the Ecological Systems Theory plays a big role in understanding these children and the school I am working at. For me it was rather different to go into a school like this in a bad neighborhood and see children behaving in ways that I had never seen before. However, for the teachers that work there are so used to it they don’t even…

Scuba diving is a form of underwater diving in which a diver uses a scuba set to breathe underwater. According to the Professional Association of Diving Instructor (PADI), a “DEEP DIVE” is considered to be anything from 18 meters (60 ft) to 30 meters (100 ft). A scuba diver moves around underwater by using swim-fins attached to the feet, however external propulsion can be provided by a diver propulsion vehicle. Scuba diving may be performed for a number of reasons; either for recreational purposes or employed professionally to perform tasks underwater such as military, rescue, or scientific diving. However, all deep-sea divers face the risk of acquiring decompression sickness (DCS), also known as the BENDS!…
