Service Learning Reflection
Service Learning Reflection This year I am happy with the amount of hours and type of services that I have completed. Our class required service was health and social needs. We helped place flyers into bags for the runners in the Aloha Run. I’ve received 5 hours for that service. I have also participated in the Sacred Hearts Academy “The Road to Oz” fundraiser for 4 hours. I spent 5 hours ushering at Kennedy Theater for the play “Sunday in the Park with George.” One of the services was assisting movie making classes during summer school. I spent 54 hours and 11 minutes helping children. An massive part of hours came from marching band where I spent a total of 62 hours. Each service was chosen for a particular reason. Bagging for the Aloha Marathon runners was apart of the service day that the school provided. I’m a Soroptimist club member and one of the activities given was ushering. We also had the opportunity to watch the play for free. One of my classes is Concert Band which meant I had to participate and help the …show more content…
It also helped me to interpret situation in more and different ways. Perseverance played a huge role in marching band. There were times when I wanted to quit or not continue, but I persevered and tried what I could. I mostly felt those moments when marching in the parking lot for an hour. Sometimes I wanted to skip or faint, but I continued to strong. I had self-discipline when coping with little kids in summer school. Some children couldn’t comprehend as well as the others and some didn’t behave well. I need self-discipline to control my frustration. I took a different approach towards them and things went well. When completing the Aloha Run service, I need diligence. I had an awful cold that day and I was having a hard time staying on task and doing it carefully. I wanted to rest that day, but I decided to work as hard as I could and undertake the

My chapter of Alpha Phi Omega is Alpha Beta Zeta, located at Radford University. Each member is required to get 35 community service hours each semester. Service projects occur around the New River Valley and help a variety of community organizations. Because Alpha Phi Omega has a partnership with the Boy Scouts of America, we host many projects that allow us to help them facilitate big events. Projects I have worked on include: cleaning a local daycare center, performing trail maintenance along a portion of the Appalachian Trail, collecting food for Meals on Wheels, raising money for different causes, running youth programs for Boy Scouts and 4-H events, cleaning our Adopt-A-Spot, beautifying local parks, and many other programs. Over the…

The place where I conducted my community service was the Regional Food Bank. The Regional Food Bank receives large quantities of foods, drinks, and other necessities from suppliers throughout the northeast, such as Hannaford or Wal-Mart. Then, at the Regional Food Bank, all of the goods that came in get checked to make sure they aren't expired or have ripped packaging, which means that they can get sorted into boxes to be sent off to families in need or to homeless shelters. The Food Bank provides over 30 million pounds a year of food to 1000 different agencies. Each box at the Food Bank can only weigh 45lbs, so that means that around 660,000 boxes of food are sent.…

My biggest community activity is for Special Olympics of New Jersey. My family and I attend many of the events for SONJ including the Summer Games. I started volunteering by working and playing with the athletes. The area we staffed was where the athletes came to take a break and play with carnival-like games. The ages ranged from little kids to adults. It was fun putting smiles on their faces when you told them they won! It showed me we aren’t any different than them. They still like to do sports and have fun. They love to win prizes as do we. They just have disabilities that make them special. Over all volunteering for SONJ is a fantastic experience and in my opinion every boy and…

The last hours that I completed were at the Edwardsville library, and I liked to do this because I definitely felt that I was having an impact on someone's life. I fulfilled the corporal work of instructing the ignorant, by teaching and assisting the kids with crafts. I enjoyed helping the kids, because it made me feel that I was really helping, and made an impact on their experience, or even if it made their…

I have always cherished the value of service and its effects on communities. A school class that I take that promotes service is Student Senate. A requirement for that class is ten hours of community service per trimester, and I have been a part of this group since sophomore year. This class is all about improving our school and creating an enjoyable environment for our students to be in. An example of this would be when I helped decorate the halls during themed weeks such as Spirit Week and Winterfest along with my fellow classmates.…

~Mahatma Gandhi. Service is to help others in need or not in need. I am excited to try to do even more service in the future. I have many ideas for the school when it comes to service. One idea is to help children in hospitals by just making them something like a card or decoration. My dad is working with a company that is rebuilding St. Peter’s Hospital and I know that some of the kids in the children’s section of the hospital would love something to cheer them up. Right now for service I give my old clothes and toys to my younger cousin and if she doesn’t want them, we take them to the Salvation Army. Also like I had mentioned in the first paragraph we donate over three or four hundred dollars a year to the WGY Christmas wish organization. That money goes to poor families so the parents can buy presents or food for their children. I know I need to work on this skill in particular but I have many good…

I learned through this incredible experience that even though I have a knack working with children, I also have a gift for working with adults. Through all the unbelievable service experiences that I have had, I have doubled my service hours. A few weeks ago I was asking my advisor, Dr. Cochran, how many more…

The third program I helped with was a soccer tournament that my fellow Bhutanese immigrants organized between teams from other states. As I volunteered there, I helped prepare food for the players, I picked up the trash, and I gave water to the players after the game. The purpose of the soccer tournament was to have fun and enjoy playing sports. I would like to join a soccer team when I go to high school. In the future, I would like to volunteer in a program that helps people who are facing cancer.…

I completed my community service for the Autism Speaks U 5K run/3K walk, which was located at Kendrick Park in downtown Amherst. The mission of this organization is to spread awareness and fund research for autism, and there are 4 pillars which are research, awareness, advocate, and family services. This organization serves children with autism who live anywhere in the nation and are the younger demographic, but can be any race/ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, and group identity. I am different from the people served because I do not have autism, but I understand that it is a disorder that is not very well understood, so it is monumental to try to change that by finding causes and treatments for autism to help families of children suffering…

Service is one pillar of the national honors society that I believe a lot in. I believe that service presents so many opportunities and is such a meaningful way for one to spend their time. During my years at Barrington High School thus far, I have participated in many service projects including packing school supplies for children in foster care, collecting money at ALS tag days, and working with children with disabilities in a horseback riding rehabilitation program. Every week I was excited to see the progress of the children I worked with as they grew through horseback riding, and I am proud to say I played a part in…

Through this organization, I was given the opportunity to lead by way of volunteerism and school involvement, participating in over twenty-five hours of community service. I was able to work with organizations like Feed the Children, packaging and loading boxes with supplies for Sandy Hurricane Relief workers, as well as Kaboom, NIKE, and the Absentee Shawnee Tribe in a community playground build for Little Axe youth. I also worked to pick up trash around my neighborhood on two occasions, completing a total of ten hours of community service. At school I emptied recycle boxes of teachers at least once every two weeks and worked in NHS sponsored events like our annual Pi…

A group of people can get together on a weekend and make some difference in the lives of others. We did not just offer our services, but also our company. The whole experience was not something that I would consider a chore or waste of my time. There was no skin off of my nose for doing this, but my work would likely have gone undone if we had decided to help some other place. Charity and civic engagement has always been something important to my family.…

In my Senior Year of being in the National Honor Society, I was excited to volunteer and to help those in need. I helped out with a soup kitchen in Brainerd through another organization that I am in, the Student Council. As I scooped soup into bowls and placed them onto people’s trays, I could see a look of appreciation and gratitude on their faces. This was the first time in my National Honor Society career where I understood just how much my time and effort meant to these individuals. This volunteer opportunity made me realize that a simple meal, smile, and effort to do something helpful and nice can really make someone’s day brighter or easier.…

If there is one thing I have learned during my service learning, it is that in order for learning to successfully take place, genuine willingness to participate is required. However, often times it is this willingness to participate is was lacks some students in school. This is especially true with the students that I teach in my service learning placement. I can definitely recall certain times when the students that I try to explain challenging topics and concepts to, would not only show lack of interest but refuse to participate in trying to understand it because of its difficulty.…
