The volunteering experiences I had really impacted my life, from volunteering at the 2013 First Coast Heart walk, to volunteering at Step Out and Walk to Stop Diabetes. At the Heart Walk I was in charge of the Kids Zone where I was responsible for kid’s safety, and at the Diabetes Walk I was responsible for greeting the walkers and making sure they got directed to their rightful stations. Being able to help those around me opened my eyes to the world. I am no longer self-centered about my life but rather focused on my fellow mankind. These valuable experiences have set a pattern in my life to keep helping others and serve my community annually. I feel that I have become a better person by volunteering, and that only through volunteering can I fulfill my purpose for existence. My experiences from volunteering at these two events were some of my most defining moments in my life.
In the two volunteering experiences, I believe that I gave my best self to them. At the beginning I was worried because I have never volunteered at any walks and I didn’t know what I was getting myself into; also, I felt like I was going to be intimidated with all the crowds of people around. At the Heart Walk, all the volunteers got to choose which station we would like to work, and I chose the kids zone because I knew I would enjoy the kid’s presence and it distracted me from the thousands of people around, which helped with my nervousness. On the other hand, at the Diabetes walk, I was in charge of greeting the walkers, and knowing I was going to be one of the first people the walkers were going to see put pressure on me, but I found that it made me push through the pressure and put my best self into it. And being a greeter I also was assigned to help direct the walkers to their fellow group stations.
