An airline is a company that offers air transport for passengers and freight. Airlines vary widely in size, from small companies with only one or two planes to huge multinational companies. While the industry initially grew slowly, these companies began to take off in a major way after World War II, thanks in part to large numbers of returning aviators. By the 1990s, air travel had become ubiquitous.
For passengers the advantages could be;
1. Better connectivity as airlines cooperate to allow passengers to transfer from one to another.
2. Greater flexibility for passengers having access to multiple airlines .
3. lower prices due to shared ticketing and transfer facilities .
4. More destinations than any one airline offers .
5. The chance to earn miles or points with one airline and have them credited to your favourite airline account.
6. Round the world tickets with multiple airlines at good prices.
Advantages for airlines are considerable and far outweigh those for the passengers in my opinion.
1. Access to a much wider passenger base
2. Sharing of facilities which dramatically lower airline costs, for example sales and maintenance, catering, ground handling including check in and boarding and bulk purchasing of common items.
3. The ability to code share. This is the most beneficial perhaps as it allows an airline to sell a ticket to a passenger in their name but fly them with a totally different airline. For example go onto BA 's website and book flights to Australia. A fair number of options appear but most of them are operated by BA part way and then Qantas or Qantas for the whole journey.
