Guiding and counseling

Work on building an integrated personality of the university student's conscious of the rights and duties of university and social life.
Studying the problems of all students, through a dedicated team of specialists, mentors and social workers. And work to help students towards how to deal with their problems.
Guide students according to the behavioral and social rules and regulations of the Whole. Guide students to abide by civilized behavior and appearance adequate and appropriate systems and traditions of the university through field-based guidance on the basis of openness to the students.
Providing the necessary service during the period of examinations, in order to help students, and relieve stress on them, and provide guidance to them.
Follow-up disciplinary procedures and their application in accordance with regulations adopted by the rules of the University.
Student services

(A) Academic services

1- Student help desk

The Student Help Desk is a planned program aiming at helping the students to achieve the psychological harmony and adjustment to the University environment and to attain progress in their studies.

The Department of Student Affairs offers many services to the students through the Student Help Desk such as, formulating guidance plan, a-group of the University advisers to answer the several enquiries of the student about the Arab Open University and its different programs.

The Student Help Desk converts some of the telephone calls to the tutors or the academic professors concerned or the coordinators of the open programs. Also, supervises the students during their presence whether inside the computer labs or the halls designed for other learning resources.

2- Student guiding and Orientation Day

This program regulates at the beginning of the academic year where new students meet the faculty and administrative members in the university. Through the programs the head of student affairs and academic advisors of each of the university department explain for the new student the programs offered by the university, academic plans, rules and regulations of the university, events and activities provided by Student Affairs departments to the student.

3- Student hand book

A student handbook was prepared and published, which introduces the student to the AOU, its regulations, programs, and facilities and services. All registered students receive the handbook prior to the beginning of theirs study.

4- Student Information system

A comprehensive Student Information System (SIS) is being built on the AOU’s headquarter computer system which will serve all students at the university. The SIS undertaking is part of the cooperation project between the AOU and UNESCO.

5- Services in examination period

Provide the necessary services during examination period, through the dissemination of guidelines and instructions for the period of examinations at the examination sites, and the establishment of guidance and counseling staff that help students to cope and ease the psychological pressure during the examination period.

6- Prepared ID card

The Student Affairs department is responsible for issuing the Student Identity cards.

All students at the AOU are responsible for keeping their ID card on hand while on campus and at any points in time students might be obligate to present their ID card to any staff and faculty member. If the student transfers to a different academic program, there will be no change as long as the student hand the previous ID card.

In the event that the student losses his card he will be held responsible for payment of the replacement.

(B) Financial services

1- Educational scholarship offer to distinguished student

The AOU is allocating five educational scholarships to the foremost achieving students according to the semester rating (i.e., with GPA between 3.75 and 4 which is the equivalent to Excellent) at the end of each semester.

The scholarship will take the form of exemption from the AOU fees by 50% the fees of the following semester for the registering student.

Academically Distinguished Honor Students

During each semester honor outstanding students awarded according to the quarterly and cumulative GPA and hours passed.

2 - Educational scholarships offered to needy students according to clear criteria.

Aids to registered needy students are disbursed in the form of exemption from AOU fees by percentage ranging from 25% to 50%. This exemption is approved according to the “criterion of needy classification”.

This exemption will be from portion of the fees of the following semester for the registering student in the following cases:

Family Disasters: like the death of one of the relatives of the first degree.
Natural Disasters, accidents and fire.
Dangerous and incurable diseases.
Special cases and the handicapped.
General Rules

The AOU stipulates that the student should submit official documents proving that he is entitled to receiving educational scholarships and aids. Also, the sums allocated for the study package are excluded from the sums of the scholarships.

3- Students Behavior and Disciplinary Measures

Disciplinary Offenses:

The students registered in the Arab Open University and in all its current and future branches are subject to the disciplinary system as illustrated below:

General Provision:

The resolutions issued by the competent committees and councils with respect to the disciplinary penalties are final. However, it is possible for the student to object to the penalty resolution sentenced in absentia by the Disciplinary Council.

This objection can be made within a week of notifying the student of the resolution.

This resolution is considered as one delivered in the presence of litigant party if the student is personally summoned to attend the investigation and he defaults on attending it without acceptable excuse.

It is possible for the student to air his grievance against the resolution of the Disciplinary Council. This can be done in a request lodged to the University branch director within fifteen days of the student's being notified of the resolution. The University branch director proffers any protests presented to him to the Disciplinary Council to consider them.

A resolution concerning referring the guilty student to the Disciplinary Committee is issued by University branch director. This is done after carrying out an investigation with the student.
