Set Dollar Value Research Paper
Often times individuals have conversations trying to pin down the exact monetary value of each individual life. However, money is not the only way one can measure the worth of a life. Assigning dollar value is not an accurate way to value a person’s life, instead a life should be valued by the experiences lived in it. All lives are equally valuable and should be treated that way. Do to unfortunate circumstances, people sometimes lose limbs, when this occurs the government will often give them a certain amount of money depending on the limb that is lost. “Ebert spent more than half of a thirty- month stretch in hospitals. His breathing tube has been removed, but the hole in his throat remains open” (Roger Ebert). Ebert had his jaw removed yet got no sum of money. Doing this leads people to believe that a set dollar value can be put on any life. However, if someone were to lose their life there would be no real way to justify the amount of money they were worth. After the 9/11 attacks he government tried to give the families that had lost a loved one some money for their loose. “…the government established an unprecedented fund to compensate them, the mathematics of loss was a little-known science”(what is a life worth?) The deceased would not care how much of a monetary …show more content…
For instance, suffering and illness impact greatly how we value not only our lives but also our loved one’s lives. When we suffer if makes us appreciate the things we had once taken for granted that much more. Roger Ebert’s wife states,”..he had one or two weeks of hope and relief when he could eat a little and drink a little and talk a little. Once, the surgery looked nearly perfect.”(Roger Ebert) When we see our loved one’s suffering or ill it helps us value every chance we get to spend with them. Also recovering from an illness often times empowers people to do the things tha they were once unable to do when

How much does it cost? How much is it worth? These are two questions that sound similar, but have totally different meanings. How much is an apple worth in the market versus how much a customer pays for it? Is the price fair due to the amount of resources it took to bring it to the market, or has its price been inflated beyond comprehension? How much is a television worth to its owner? How much is a person worth to their country? These are the kinds of questions (among many others) that Walter Mosley, author of the essay Twelve Steps Toward Political Revelation, aims to help answer. In his essay one can find Mosley’s that Mosley argue about the value of goods and people; however, even Mosley seems to be unaware that one cannot put a price on everything.…

It is hard to imagine a society in which we would place a monetary value on human life. The practice of slavery in early American history was a disturbing example. Beginning in the early seventeenth century, the demand for labor became increasingly important as plantations in the South were on the rise. Slaves were considered a cheap form of labor and highly valuable. The output they provided far exceeded the input of resources. According to History.com, African-American slaves helped build the economic foundations of the new nation. Following on this principle of economics, the acceptability of slaves as a value of a transaction encouraged the spread of the system. The rationale was that, the more and higher the quality of…

Value is based on the amount of money that people will make in their lives. In the article, “What is a Life Worth?” by Amanda Ripley, after the catastrophic accident, the government attempts to compensate by giving money to victims’ families; however, the system it distributes money is unacceptable. When Ripley reveals, “That means a broker’s family will qualify for a vastly higher award than a window washer’s family” (Ripley 8). An individual’s life worth less than others when he or she had a low paying job. The lives of all people should be valued at the same price regardless of their jobs. However, the government views profession is a critical matter when it comes to identifies how much his or her life value is not only after the death but also when he or she is still alive. Furthermore, the author of the article “What Is the Value of a Human Life?”, Kenneth Feinberg, who also agrees with Ripley’s perspective. According to Feinberg, “Mr. Feinberg, my husband was a fireman and died a hero at the World Trade Center. Why are you giving me less money than the banker who represented Enron?” (Feinberg 3). Although they are in the same accident, the amount of money that they received is totally different. People began to raise the question why some family gets more than others. As a consequence of the government response, people believe their life worth nothing when they have low- paid jobs. One might object here that compare the value of life in jobs how much they are worth is fair. If people want to get treated equally, then they should work hard to earn respect from others. People should value life, not by how much money they make, but by how much they enjoy their…

In the article “What is The Value Of A Human Life?” By: Kenneth Feinberg is say “The law required that I give more money to the stockbroker, the bond trader and the banker than to the waiter, the policeman, the fireman and the soldier at the Pentagon.” The law wanted the people who made a lot of money to get a higher compensation then the policeman and firefighters who rush in there to saves the life of other people. This is wrong because the policemen and firemen put there self in danger when they go on a call, they did not have to be a firemen or police officer. Overcoming tragic events is what truly counts, for we are meant to live happily and in acceptance that there are things that we cannot change. In many cases, individuals seem to feel as though they’ve lost an amount so great that they are unable to free themselves of the pain. This perspective often leads to further suffering. A Temporary Matter by Jhumpa Lahou and Kiss Me by Andrew Pyper demonstrate a loss of identity, negligence towards communication, and eventually leading to the destruction of a relationship.…

    The Value of Life

The value of human life is still a mystery and we as a society is still trying to figure it out. During early times, life was not valued at all. People were being turned into slaves and treated like nothing. In today’s world though, we base the value of life by our achievements, one’s past, or the salary one receives. This shouldn’t be the way we value one’s life. We as a society cannot assign a value on one’s life. Money cannot buy happiness. In the article “What Is a Life Worth” by Amanda Ripley, she argues that nowadays we base life on money. “The courts started to put a dollar value on a life-after death” (“What Life is Worth”, stanza 1). I do not agree with this because people expect money after a death occurs to a loved one. No amount of money can fill in the void of a loss someone is enduring. William Shakespeare, one of the most famous and influential writer, argues his point of view of human life in “Hamlet’s Soliloquy.” Shakespeare uses a suicidal character, Hamlet, to show that the only time we value life is when something bad is happening. Also to show that life is full of misfortunes. Both Shakespeare and Ripley seem to be suggesting that life is only valued by death. Death opens our eyes and makes us cherish what we have. This sounds very sad, but it’s very true. The government doesn’t seem to care about human life. Cheri Sparacio, the widow of Thomas Sparacio, exclaims, “The government is not taking any responsibility for what it’s done. This was just one screw up after another.” The government tries to replace loss with money. How can one’s life value be bought? Nowadays, one way life is valued is by money.6 On the other hand, Lance Armstrong believes that death is not an option. That the value of life should be cherished and taken for granted because your life can end any second. In the excerpt “It’s Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life” by Lance Armstrong with Sally Jenkins, it talks about…
