For instance the island is vital to the plot by creating isolation leaving the prey with nowhere to escape. The island aspect of the story is essential because it establishes a way that General Zaroff can keep the people hostage when hunting. When being hunted by the dogs Rainsford sees no option of escape “ He saw that straight futile; inevitably it would bring him face to face with the sea.” (11) the option of death or the sea caused him to jump into the dark rough waters. If the story is set on the mainland the prey could flee or tell the police. As well as isolation
