in California Louie deals with his emotional outcome of the war and the Japanese camps. His wife tries helping Louie with his drinking problem by taking him to a preacher. He become much better after he accepted Billy Graham's or the preacher's helping in going through his emotional problems. Main Characters – Louie Zamperini is the most important character in the book this book revolves around him. In this book it shows what he went through and how lived on the misery of experiences of war.
He was a POW in one of the Japanese camps where they kept American soldiers hostage. During the time of life in the Japanese camps he was extremely skinny and was not treated the right way. "As Louie prepared to start Torrance High, he was looking less like an impish child and more like a dangerous young man." - 34. The second person that was also important was Russell Phillips but his friends called him Phil, He was important to this book because he and Louie survived on the raft together for over a month. He enables Louie and himself to stay mentally active on the raft. He would have died if he hadn't stayed mentally active. He was separated from Louie soon after they both were captured by the Japanese and sent to the Omori camp. The book informed is about Phil mainly when they were on the raft trying to reach land. "He had a tidy, pleasant, boyish face that tended to blend with the scenery." - page 93. One of the other main character in the Unbroken book is Mutsuhiro Watanabe or the the "Bird". He was the worst of the worst Japanese prison guards ever, he beat up so many POWs and even some guards for his sexual desire. He haunted Louie in his dreams and made Louie's life so much worse than
it already was. The Bird beat many POWs until they were a second away from dying. When the war was over he went incognito because the police were searching for him because of him war-crimes. He was in the top of the "Most Wanted" list in Japan. The court never came to charge him and he kept hiding as the days went on. "According to Hatto,Watanabe was a sexual sadist, freely admitting that beating prisoners brought him to climax." - page 330. Another main character is Cynthia Applewhite who was Louie's wife. She was important to the book because she helped Louie get through his issues of the aftermath of the war. When they started living together she took him many places that would try helping him become neutral. She took him many places to help him get over the aftermath of the war. She believed that the pasteur would help him but Louie kept on refusing. Eventually he agreed and him got over the aftermath and they both lived happily ever after. "She seemed to like him, and he thought her bright and lively and so beautiful." - page 469. Plot Summary – This story begins in Torrance, California where Louie is raised. During his childhood he is a trouble maker and his brother Pete turns him into a track star. He starts racing and sets a world record for the fastest time and it doesn’t get bet until nineteen years onwards. He went to the Olympics and wanted to go for gold but didn't come to his reality. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1941 and was assigned to a B-24. He went into the Pacific War and bombed many places. He worked with eight people on the B-24 which they nicknamed "Super Man". One of the crewmen was one of the main characters which was Phil. They got shot at and the "Super Man" was put in to be repaired. Louie's crew was assigned to the "Green Hornet" which wasn’t the best B-24 to be in. When they went into the war zone the plane got shot down and Louie, Phil, and Matt landed in the water with a raft. They were left with a few items and they ran out and had to fish for food somehow. Matt died and Phil and Louie were soon to die if they don’t reach land. They were captured by the Japanese and interrogated. They were in the ocean for forty seven days. Both of them were sent to war camps for prisoners. They got separated a little while later. Louie encountered the Bird, who was the most abusive guard ever. He was tortured until he wasn’t able to breathe anymore. He experienced nightmares and migraines from all of his fear from the Bird. After the POWs go notified of their victory, they all returned home and dealt with other problems. When Louie returned home he meet Cynthia Applewhite who he fell in love with. They got married and her family took it the wrong way and destroyed all ties that connected her to her family. He experienced an aftermath of the war in Hollywood, California. He raged the streets at night and was violent. He even strangled his wife while he was asleep but woke up to stop. His wife tried helping in various ways. The way he came over his aftermath was when he finally accepted to go see Billy Graham who was a pasteur. He refused so much but Cynthia would not give up she had a feeling about it. When he came over it he poured and destroyed all intoxications he had laying around the house. Louie and Cynthia lived happily ever after. Conflict – (Man vs. Man) In this conflict, Louie and "The Bird" were involved in this conflict. The cause of this conflict starts when Louie doesn't look him in his eyes. Then he beats Louie into a pulp and makes him starve and suffer during the time they both lived together. The result of the Bird doing this is that Louie gets nightmares and is afraid of him. "Louie searched the empty sky and hoped that the bombers would come before the Bird put an end to him." - page 345. (Man vs. Self) In this conflict only Louie is involved in it. This conflict occurs when he returns from the war, he experiences nightmares and becomes extremely violent. He abuses his wife, hurts other people, and he gets drunk and drive at midnight in Hollywood, California. The final result of this conflict happens when he accepts to get help from the pasteur and he gets back it to his normal state of mine
