Seven Core Traditions in Qualitative Research
A. Ethnography
The basic position of ethnography is that this study is projected to study the behavior of the subjects under investigation when they are involved in the happening situation where they naturally belong to or do their specific daily life activity. The main research method to be employed in this study is extended fieldwork by making detailed field notes on the studied behaviors either through participant observation in which the researchers directly involved in the activities of the research subjects or through interviewing and collecting artifacts. For example, a researcher assumes that to gain an insight into teachers’ approach to new curriculum in Indonesia teachers should be observed in classroom setting” (Malik and Hamied, 2014, p. 231). Besides, the theory discovered from the process of grounded theory study can be used as the foundation in the practice of EFL teaching and learning. Again, in addition to its advantages, the grounded theory has the challenges as well. The main challenge is the theoretical sensitivity which “refers to a personal quality of the researcher, as well as to the attribute f having insight, the ability to give meaning to data, the capacity to understand and capability to separate the pertinent from which isn’t” (Malik & Hamied, 2009, p. 234). Usually this study is focused on aspect of a person’s life. The methods used for this study can be varied. According to Gay, Mills & Airasian (2009, pp. 388 - 390), the narrative research techniques are “restorying, oral history, photographs, memory boxes, and other artifacts, sstorytelling, letter writing, autobiographical and biographical writing, and other narrative data sources (for example, documents such as lesson plans, parents newsletters and personal philosophy statements). The possible outcomes of research especially for the purpose of TEFL/ TESL are “variety of insights, ... the information which can inform theory building and policy making, and practical pedagogical information”(Heigham & Cocker, 2009, p. 47).
