In chapter two, the Student Fear Factor, from Rebecca Cox book the College Fear Factor, she explores how students’ fears effect their success and how students use fear management strategies to overcome these fears. Cox examines the anxiety students have about transitioning from high school to college. She notices that the autonomy when transitioning into adulthood provokes anxiety in some students having to do with new responsibilities all on their own. In relation to college, she notes “the stress of assuming the responsibilities of college” where students are unaware of the college expectation. Rebecca correlates this stress to a lack of “college knowledge”, meaning that students are uncertain about course requirements, classwork and classes.…
Many students show an interest in a college education, but are faced with the burden of cost. Some students may have an idea of what they are interested in before applying for college, while others may have not decided. Community college offers a time for students to grow with higher education and learn what their interests may be. The title of my analysis article is “Two Years Are Better Than Four” by Liz Addison, published September 26th, 2007. A title can give the reader an idea on what they are reading about.…

College readiness is not determined by a set of skills; rather it is determined by how academically involved a student wants to be in his/her education. He states that, “students who are ready for college like to read. If you don’t like to read, you are going to find college very difficult” (pp. 1). In my experience, by coming to college and wanting to be more involved in my education, I realized that college is actually simple and that my increased involvement also has been leading me to be college ready and successful. In college I wanted to be more academically involved and by doing so I realized how I became more organized, gained a habit of completing many assignments before due dates, and could notice how my grades were very much improved. In addition, the author states, “If you don’t love to read you will probably be confused and frustrated while at college” (pp. 2). In my first week of college my reading assignments consisted of hundreds of pages that had to be read in the same week. Even when reading without the love to do so, the assignments never created any irritation. Never in my life have I enjoyed reading, or have understood how someone enjoys reading. Nonetheless, I have completed every assignment because of how it would be a significant factor in my…
Community college, The worst fear for some and the best experience for others. Many people think that community college is a bad place to attend. They think they might not be good enough to be in a 4 year university. They seem to take that negativity throughout, their whole college experience. In the article, The Seven False Beliefs: Addressing the psychosocial Underpreparedness of the community College Student by Miranda, It stated that many community college students don’t start with the greatest attitude and their beliefs can also have a negative impact on them. The student already have a lot going on for example, work, financial aid, social life. All of this is a lot to handle for one person and sometimes that can create a big stress.…
What other people don’t tell them is that college is to help build people that can better the community and the world. McCreery writes about how college’s true purpose is to build people that have the education that allows them to survive in the world and be able to think things you that others didn’t not just to make you a big paycheck. The way College does this is by providing students with classes that can help them grow as a human and be the best they can be. A great example of this is when I took a liberal arts class this class helped me learn how I learn and how other people learn so wat I learned is that i learn the best when I write things down but it also thought me that people learn differently some people learn better by seeing things or hearing what they need to learn and other learns by touching and feeling things to remember it and learn…
There are so many students attending college who simply do not belong there. Most people think they will not get anywhere if they do not attend a college, or have some type of educational background. When an average high schooler walks into senior year, the students are quickly bombarded by school counselors discussing which four year college they should apply too. At my high school, it was never second guessed whether the student would be attending college but was assumed. Most people have misconceptions that if they do not get a degree, they will unable to obtain a job and have an overall unsuccessful life. In Charles Murray’s, “Are Too Many People Going to College” and Freeman Hrabowski’s “College Prepares People for Life”, the two author both discuss the education system we have in place, however, Charles Murray provides a more convincing argument that college, contrary to popular belief, is just not for everyone.…
Many students go to college with the sole intention to get their degree, become employed, and earn a higher salary. Students with these intentions tend to struggle more throughout their college years. Students go to college because they obtain skills and characteristics that employers find desirable. These skills and characteristics also allow them to function in society. Making the leap from high school classrooms to college campuses can be difficult for many students simply because college professors expect so much more inside and outside of the classroom. Students who go to college are expected to be self-sufficient from the day they get there. At the collegiate level, students should come to class ready to participate, engage in the course…
Every year a class of high school seniors graduate and then begin their lives as adults. While the choices they made in high school are important, the choices they make after this will be of the utmost importance. A decision of how to start their lives as adults either joining the workforce, the armed forces, or attending college are the choices they have to make. A lot goes into which direction the student will steer his or her life. Pressures of going to college come from not only school teachers, but family, friends, and peers also. Teachers tell their students that college is the best way to go if they want to succeed in life, as many careers require further education beyond that of a high school diploma. Parents are always glad to see…
