Reflection on the book titled “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”

“Your life doesn’t just ‘happen.’ Whether you know it or not, it is carefully designed by you. The choices, after all, are yours. You choose happiness. You choose sadness. You choose decisiveness. You choose ambivalence. You choose success. You choose failure. You choose courage. You choose fear. Just remember that every moment, every situation, provides a new choice. And in doing so, it gives you a perfect opportunity to do things differently to produce more positive results.”—Stephen Covey “Every color, every hue is represented by me and you”. This song by Francis Magalona somewhat relates why people act uniquely in responding certain circumstances in our life. That our life is full of colors. Every day we live adds twist and color of our existence. That we experience different challenges but I believe that there are ways that may actually work and be effective for all.
As I read “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey”, I realized about knowing and nurturing the fundamental truths in our life and making them accessible to us at all times to the point where it’s easy to draw solutions to problems from them, making as a much more effective person in all aspects of life. Honestly, I got interested and reflect the ideas presented by Covey.
Dr. Stephen Covey is not only teaches us some tips but giving us some important ideas about how to cope up different challenges in life and also how to become a successful in life. This book encouraged me to do things to become an effective people. That by this, it will lead me of what I become in the near future.

For me Dan Lewis's view of "life being a smorgasbord" does apply. Life's is like a food buffet with many experiences, some you may like and some you may not but that's okay because you will try them all anyway. When you look at your life you should think of where you are now, where your going and your accomplishments. An example of my life beiong a smorgasbord is when my 7-year-old twin brothers were born. They had been through multiple heart surgeries, many months in Dayton Childrens and still to this day are fully functioning. They were born with chagre syndrom. You go to bed on eday thinking everything is okay, your life is on track and it'll all be thge same tommorrow, the next day and the day after that, but then you wake up and youre…

Violent crimes in Chicago are trending up. Every day there are multiple homicides. Living in the Chicagoland area people are exposed to Chicago media and their coverage of these violent crimes. In a Wall Street Journal article “Chicago Dials Back on 911 Responses,” Jack Nicas reports on this argument. He is trying to bring the issue to a national audience and let them know about the policies Chicago is putting in place about dealing with the homicide rate. The beginning of the article talks about the solution Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and Police Chief Gary McCarthy have for the cities increasing homicide rate. Chicago Law Enforcement’s solution is to not respond in person to non-violent Crimes. Some of the non-violent crimes include, burglary, robberies, car theft, and threatening phone calls. These are considered to be crimes that in which no one is in imminent danger. These non-violent crimes will be dispatched to desk officers who will fill out police reports by phone. Chicago will keep 44 more police officers on the streets trying to prevent the violent crimes from happening. Arguments continue to swirl on this recent issue. Many Chicagoans oppose. What are their tax dollars paying for? What about increasing the number of police officers in the city? Jack Nicas uses all three rhetorical appeals and uses statistics that have helped put the new policy in place. He quotes from Chicago Police Chief Gary McCarthy and other high rank law enforcement officials. Also Nicas touches on some of the non-violent crimes that will be dispatched to officers on phones. His audience is a national audience and does not direct the article towards the city of Chicago. From reading Jack Nicas’ article he opposes of the decision. Yet the way the article is written makes his argument not effective.…

We need to renew ourselves daily. Covey wrote we need to take care of our heart, soul, mind, and body. To take care of the heart we need love, for the soul we need relaxation. For the out mind we need to gain knowledge, and for our bodies we need to stay fit and healthy. Habit seven is “Sharpen the Saw”. Taking care of ourselves is very important. Covey writes about our values. What are values? Values are the items we are proud of in life, and the people that we love. These people and items are true treasures. Just taking time to sit back, and look at all of the challenges we face, and to feel good about ourselves is amazing. We can however ask ourselves if we could do better. Everyone should say they can do better, however perfect is not an option. If we follow our values and the seventh habit it will make life easier, and happier. At the end of the day we need to be able to look at ourselves and smile. Covey wants us to take care of ourselves. “Abraham Lincoln was once asked “What would you do if you had eight hours to cut down a tree?” He replied, “I’d spend the first four hours sharpening my…

Habit 4 of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People was a chapter devoted to effective interpersonal leadership. The chapter discusses how you must lead and live with a win/win thought process. There are six paradigms of interaction; win/win, win/lose, lose/win, lose/lose, win and win/win or no deal. Win/win thinking makes everybody happy. It is a mutual agreement that benefits both parties and leaves both parties feeling satisfied with the decision. Win/lose is a flawed thought process. It is based on winning based on power, not principle. It’s unhealthy because it leaves one party a “loser” and has effects in the long run. Win/lose people use position, power, credentials, possessions or personality to gain the upper hand. It is thought that win/lose people are the way they are from birth; their parents molded them into that way of thinking. The academic world is also based on win/lose concepts. Students are graded with letters based on performance and compared to other students. Grades carry a social value for students and can either open doors for them or close them. Athletics is also based widely on a win/lose concept, if you don’t win the game, you’re a “loser.” The law is loosely based on a win/lose concept when it comes to court. One party wins the case at the other’s expense. Lose/win people are worse off than win/lose people. Lose/win people are people who let other’s walk all over them and give other people the “win.” Lose/win people tend to have little to no courage and often end up the “nice guy,” who gets stepped on often. Win/lose people take advantage of lose/win people and play off of their weaknesses. Both of these personalities of people are based off of the person’s insecurities. Lose/lose situations happen when two win/lose people get together and try to best each other. They try so hard to beat the other person or get back at them that their results end up lacking. Win people are people who do not want other people to…

Without these examples, the principles within the book could be easily summarized into a short essay. Still, the examples of how the techniques and principles explained in the book, adds a sense of reliability and truthfulness to the book. When I first heard the book´s title, I assumed that it would include a series of steps that would either be complicated or unrealistic. At first, it seemed that reading this book would not help reach the goals stated within the title itself which are basically to improve your relationship with others. Despite the fact that I usually do not change the first impressions I have about a book, I have to recognize that the experience of reading this book actually changed my thought s about it. The principles that Dale Carnegie suggest in this book are actually quite simple to follow and apply on a daily basis; the only problem though, is remembering the 20+ principles and what they…
