Gender is the classification of being male or female. Sex is the biological characteristics that defines individuals as male or female. Gender and sex are not the same thing but they are very similar in the matter. There are those who are born into one sex and then later transitions to the other, they are transgender which simply means that they changed from one gender to another but biologically they are the sex they were born as.

Gender and sex contribute to the concepts and constructions of masculinity and femininity by providing a divide. Men are looked at as the bread winners and the providers, they are generally stronger which are the qualities of masculinity. Women are looked at as the softer type, the ones that take care of everyone and provides comfort and take care of everyone, that is the qualities of femininity.

I believe that our concepts of gender and sex contribute to the ways we embrace gender and sex in diversity. As humans we automatically make connections that relate to men and women, we expect men to do the heavy lifting and we expect women to cook and clean. When we see a women in an element that is more masculine and vice versa with men we automatically look at as unusual because it is not the expected and normally embraced element that we are used to.
