Sex in the media
Have you ever been in your car and the song Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke is being played on the radio? Why do our Disney Channel teenage idols turn to exploiting their selves in a sexual matter to better their careers? This is what sells in American society; this what sex in the media brings about. With the increase of technology in the past decade we are viewing and listening to more sexually explicit material then ever. With the mass media distinctively hiding sexual messages anywhere and everywhere they are finding new ways to basically sell sex to kids. Children spend 5 hours a day using media and listen to music for about 2 hours a day, this many hours of media puts many ideas in the minds of young impressible children, when children are learning derogatory sex information from the media it leads to negative effects on the individual and our society as whole.
The Music Industry is a major contender of negatively endorsing sexual relations and sexuality to the public. According to a study done by NBC teens whose iPods are full of music with sexual lyrics start having sex sooner. The Hip – Hop/ Rap genre especially gets criticized most for these because they often use derogatory lyrics against women and make them seem like nothing more then a sex item. In Rick Ross’s controversial Verse on Rockos “UOENO” he says “I Put Molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it I took her home and I enjoyed that” Which he is giving a message that the use of date rape drugs is an acceptable way to have sexual relation with another person. When in fact in America date rape is totally against our morals as a country. Rick Ross took so much criticism on his song that the radios doctored up his verse to skip over the date rape line, it even go too out of hand for Ross that he’s endorsement of Reebok was forced to by public interest to drop. But Rick Ross isn’t the only culprit of these action many other artist use sexual content in their song to make their song popular without realizing the effects its having on children. Many other artists such as Eminem and Nikki Minaj have some very sexual lyrics and videos. The Music videos depict these Males as party animals and women as sexual items that are dressed in barley nothing flaunting and dancing around to attract the male eye. “The impact that these videos have had on the younger generation is obvious. If you walk through some of these high schools or even junior high schools, some of these girls look like they are dressed to meet up with a pimp, instead of going to math class” (Eyal 168). Artist Such as Miley Cyrus formally know as Hannah Montana has had a huge explosion on the sex scene in America, with her stating she can twerk “Which is shaking your buttock in sexual ways“ which most of her following is younger people who watch or use to watch Hannah Montana and idolize Miley. But now as you can see Miley Cyrus Basically is the Billboard for sex in today’s time. In her recent Video for Wrecking Ball there are many sexually themed scenes in they’re such as when she licks the hammer or when she swings on a wrecking ball exposed. Miley has recently said that she would rather be naked in front of people then cry in front of people (Rivera). This hear alone may convince young girls to be naked in public rather then expressing them self in a more orderly fashion. One other degrading this it that many women artist of the genre use them selves in the lyrics as nothing more then sexual items meant to fulfill sexual desire by both men and women. Many lyrics by female rapper Nicki Minaj use this type of context, such as the “My flow tighter then a d**k in the butt” and “ This box better then the one he was held in” both supports Browns Argument that “Nicki Minaj, promotes sexual curiosity, sexuality, and indecent behavior. In her songs, she hints to her fans that she is bi-sexual and excessively talks about sexual acts with both men and women. Along with these sexual acts, she wears clothes that highlight her curves. *Wearing tight leggings, high heels, and colorful bras is not the way to show men how beautiful you are but many girls look up to her because a lot of guys like her. This can make women think twice about what guys like and want in a woman. Little do rappers know their lyrics can easily influence young listeners” there is no doubt in my mind that these lyrics have a direct relationship with younger adolescents having sex earlier. Now the great consversey comes should it be the artists themselves or the parent of these children that restrict these lyrics from being heard.
Music is not the only branch of mass media that has grown to endorse heavily sexually content; movies are also including more sexual scenes more then ever. With popularity of movies such as American Pie and Spring breakers with the main focus of teen to watch these movies are the steamy sex scenes they contain. "However, there is a correlation between the two. Sensation seeking, or the tendency to seek more novel and intense sexual stimulation, does seem to increase in young people who watched more movies with sexually explicit content.” Silveys information says there is an increase in sexual stimulation in young people when they watch more sexually real-life couples imitate explicit content. These actions in movies today impresses the youth that this is the way their sex life should be or at least close to it. In movie Spring Breakers Disney Channels High school Musical star Vanessa Hudgens was involved in-group sex with Ashley Benson and James Franco. Yes I know their actors just doing their job, but young children are very impressible especially by their favorite characters from children shows. Hudgens Previously starred in Disney Channels High School Musical where she took her claim to fame. It will be a very bad influence to be thinking group sex is normal and to regard all the risk on pregnancies and STDS that come along with multiple partners. “Adolescents who are exposed to more sexual content in movies start having sex at younger ages, have more sexual partners, and are less likely to use condoms with casual sexual partners,"(Ani) The movie American pie changed the view of sexuality of high school teens through out America making it a must to lose your virginity before you graduate or you were considered to be a loser. People were actually being alienated because they were still virgins in senior year. Many males were being bullied because of the fact that they were virgins, and becoming frowned upon and mocked of. Girls were being called prude for not engaging in sexual activity in high school, as Larnick goes about saying in American Pie Ruined my Adolescence. With the expansion of technology and the invention of the On-Demand feature on todays modern Cable boxes many of the children are Watching these highly sexually filled movies in secret with out parents permission and sometimes with out the parents even recognizing.
With Netflix having more then 40 million subscribers of their stream of movies and television series, there has been a dramatic increase in media being watched. With more sex being allowed on television in today’s time more then ever there is a bigger population of people watching and being influenced by it. “The biggest concern among social scientists about a high volume of sexual content on the tube is the impact it has on younger viewers. Study after study indicates a correlation between kids watching more sexually charged TV and having sex at an earlier age”(Littleton). The Introduction of sex on television started in 1947 with “Mary Kay and Johnny” which was the first television series that included a couple that slept in the same bed. With the introduction of the Hit MTV show The Real World, witch is a reality TV shows that has strangers living in the same house. This series strived of I issues of sex, STDS and abortion. "
(Fries). It is important for children to either be censored from or made aware that many reality TV shows is not reality at all and is all for the entertainment purpose. If not warned properly children may become involved in the same actions as there favorite television characters do. The Real World paved the way for other shows controversial such as The Jersey Shore, Which sexual references and sexual actions is a big major theme of the very popular MTV series. With the many ground breaking Technological inventions of the TV century we are viewing more stuff the ever, and that includes the bad and the good. With the rates of television, movies and music all on the rise there has been a greater impact on the sexual influences in todays children. Society as a whole must limit children’s exposure to inappropriate explicit content to better society in the long run. I believe that sexual education is a very important factor in aiding the fight of the negative influences of the negative sexual contents we are exposed to.

The media’s have both positive and negative in regards to teaching sexually responsibility. Society’s attitude towards sexual behavior is more tolerant and permissive now than ever before. Entertainment directed at a teen audience is much more sexually explicit allowing teens to believe that sexual activity is something common that everyone in society does. The popular series “Twilight” is a perfect example because although the book is meant for a teen audience, it contains a sexual nature. Another example would be the TV show, “16 and Pregnant” which glamourizes the issue of teen pregnancy. These new social norms make teenagers feel that it is accepted behavior to become sexually active at a…

In hip hop and rap, many of the lyrics and images portray women of all ethnicities as sexual objects and depict the exploitation of and violence against women. The image of dozens of semi-naked women dancing provocatively around one blinged-out rapper has become standard in music videos. Similarly, pimps have morphed from abusive, controlling and criminal men to trendy, stylish icons. Hip hop has become a mess of unrealistic and arguably dangerous images of female sexuality.…

By doing so, he informs the reader of the disadvantages of promoting degrading images of women and objectifying them in music videos. Parents have become aware of the language used and have begun restricting their children from contributing to the industry. As a result, the rap music industry’s profits will inevitably decline as women and young people become increasingly hesitant towards the genre. Brian also reintroduces the fact that rap music is harmful to women and their self-esteem. The rap genre encourages young people, especially young males, to be promiscuous and implies that women are objects used for pleasure. Ultimately, the continuation of theses nuances of misogyny and sexual objectification will result in a generation of domestic violence and the overpowering growth of a patriarchal…

Sex sells, but does the certain aura young celebrities portray in movies justify our media selling sex?. In Richard Roeper’s Esquire article, “The Jailbait Dilemma”, he is fully aware of how women are sexualized throughout popular culture, especially in movies: “They come to the table with physical gifts, and they're presented onscreen in a stylized, sexualized manner, and they are objects of fantasy” However, although it may be true that “men never stop appreciating the unique beauty of girls who are just becoming women-and some of the most enticing young women in the world are the ones who are starring in these movies”, this “unique beauty” that is displayed in not only movies, but also television, music, advertisements, magazines, cartoons, toys & games, and even the social media is a false image of young girls that only creates problems. Because studies have proven that the media images and the messages they send out have such a negative impact on…

In the essay “Buried Alive: Our Children and the Avalanche of Crud”, David Denby argues that pop culture is distinctive and damaging to children in the United States today. Pop culture is damaging because media has changed to become three-dimensional, inescapable, omnivorous, and self-referring. Media, according to Denby is everywhere; you cannot step away from the system of it. It has been known to be a commercialized aggression that puts parents on defense. Children now days have become commoditized towards television because they are being sold. Children are being treated as objects because of how television is influencing them. Television is teaching a child that is it cool to be vulgar. Denby suggest that vulgarity is a concept children do not understand because the makers of commercial cultures teach them not too. Denby argues that the old dream that parents and teachers would nurture the development of a child is now lost. Media has taken over the parental role because it is teaching children negative concepts and parents do not have control over this. Irony plays a part in this aspect because this is a form of commodity. Media does not only influence children through television but also through the products that you can buy in store or online. I agree with Denby because television shows have taught children to become vulgar and stereotypical.…

Most teenagers who listen to sexual explicit lyrics are more likely to have sex because they believe its normal and seeing those rappers singing about it looks fun to them. Example is the Nicki Minaj video song ‘’Anaconda’’ in her lyrics she talks how freaky she could be in the bed with a guy, the message she passed in her music ‘’Anaconda’’, is that women are meant to provide sexual and entertainment for men. Young teenagers in America especial the females who look up to Nicki Minaj as role model, would accept the fact that female are meant to be a sex object. When reading through the sexual consumerism article, I was really amazed at looking at the amount of things we are surrounded by in our daily lives that portray sexual concepts. All of these things are being shown everywhere such as doctor’s place and other public areas. The first and most important avenue to be used is the media society. Media is one avenue that has perpetuated and magnified the problem of sexualization of girls through advertisements, music, videos and television and radio shows that portray the celebrities and popular women in the society as sexualized stereotypes (Curry & Choate, 2010). Most of them dress inappropriately in order to impress men audience since this culture of sexualization of girls and women has been an avenue for popularity and famousness. The media should then turn around and enforce policies that prohibit commercial advertisement of any kind that portrays sexualization of girls. The policies should also employ the fact that no popular woman entity should be put on air waves in the name of shows if they are dressed appropriately or in the manner that do not depict them as sexualized objects. Additionally, the media fraternity should also come up with regulations that control the content that is aired in their channels through music and video shows. This regulation should entail the banning of playing music where women are depicted dancing half-naked or sometimes fully naked entertaining their male counterparts. If this is put in place, young girls will not be able to access the sexualized messages and information that teaches them to value how they look rather than what they can…

Whether it is social media, television advertisements, billboards, or website promotions, the American people are bombarded with provocative and sexual images, videos, and ads. These advertisements and pictures may not always specifically target girls and women, but these are the exact people who are affected the most from this onslaught.
