Sex Lies And Conversation Deborah Tannen Analysis
Why Is It So Hard for Men and Women To Talk To Each Other? In the essay Sex, Lies, and Conversation, Deborah Tannen explores why marriages have such a high divorce rate and how conversation plays a key role in this. Tannen touches on many different opinions and viewpoints and supports a lot of these opinions with statistics. Her points are very clear, however the essay contains many unsupported opinions. The essay, as a whole, is very informational but also could be revised to better persuade the readers to Tannen’s viewpoints. In this essay, Tannen explains why conversation is so important in marriages and how it is a leading cause of such a high divorce rate in the United States. Tannen divides her essay into four parts to make …show more content…
Tannen says these habits are formed from a very early age. She says she believes that systematic differences in childhood socialization make talk between men and women like cross-cultural communication, heir to all the attraction and pitfalls of that enticing but difficult enterprise (Tannen 101). She goes on to explain that kids typically play with children of their own gender and therefore develop sex-separate organizational structures and interactive norms. *** In the third section, Listening to Body Language, Tannen explains how men and women interpret body language differently and how this plays a big part in misunderstanding one another. When women are among other women, they usually make noises that suggest they are listening and encourage the talker to keep going. When they carry this habit into conversations with men, the men take these noises as interruptions and a sign that they are overreacting or impatient. Men are often silent listeners and tend to look around and face different directions while listening. Women interpret these habits as not listening or showing a lack of care. Also, when women talk to each other they tend to think that a conversationalists

As stated in our text, various factors can bind married couples together, such as economic interdependencies, legal, social and moral constraints, relationship, and amongst other things. In the recent years some of these factors have diminished their strengths. The modern generation sees marriage in a different perspective altogether. Individuals today feel they are stable independently, they do not need to rely on their spouse for emotional or financial support. Many are career driven and soar to conquer their dreams over settling down with a family. Such untraditional views have increased divorce rates.…

Deborah Tannen’s “Sex, Lies, and Conversation” is a brief look at how men and women communicate with one another and the cross-culture differences between their individual styles and needs for conversation. Women often say that men do not listen or do not want to talk. Tannen gives reasons why women tend to believe that men are not listening, and shows that just because men have a different approach to communicating does not mean they are not listening to what women are saying. She uses several different examples to back up her statements including early childhood differences in communication between girls and boys, the body language men use and how women tend to interpret it, and how women tend to receive information while communicating. Men and women have very different expectations when it comes to communicating with one another.…

Whether a male or a female, no one should ignores gender patterns. “Generalizing about groups of people makes many of us nervous. We like to think of ourselves as unique individuals, not representatives of stereotypes. But it is more dangerous to ignore patterns than to articulate them,” (Tannen 213). Men and women have the difference in the way they talk, even they live or work together. People like to think of ourselves as unique individuals, not representatives of stereotypes. In order to articulate these patterns, we have to focus on three aspects that cause people problem to ignore patterns of gender. They are differences in conversation goals, asking for direction and trouble talk.…

Most marriages crash because of partners not living up to their sexual expectations. Marriage he argues is built through a long and methodical process of communication but this leaves one to wonder why some crash so easily these days. The reverse is the case for mere love relationships and affairs. The writer is apt in saying that the very young doesn’t understand the ‘pleasures of love’ and I agree with that. The use of fictional characters from Shakespeare’s play will make readers not to take Davies seriously and he would have gotten more credit by citing real life testimonies. Lastly, conversation as he suggested is essential for long-lasting relationships as partners opening their hearts and minds to each other understand themselves…

Without communication our lives would be dull because we wouldn't learn from each other or keep up with what is occurring around us every day. This text by Andrew Keen is as the title alludes to “Sex, lies and the Internet”. It is obvious that Andrew Keen, who wrote this in his book from 2007, is critical of the media the Internet, which, in this text’s example, abuses the opportunity people have to meet each other virtually. It is obvious why he is pointing out two really serious stories posted on two different Web sites, because they make his argumentation for clamming that the Internet Is only up to bad things even stronger. Basically it is about people making fun of virtual places to meat. In this case a marketplace for one-night stands, and think it is a risk-free platform due to it is “an editorless medium where the only rules are that there are no rules”. He is here refereeing to the story with the Seattle…

The impression of not listening results from misalignments in the mechanics of conversation. The misalignment begins as soon as a man and a woman take physical positions. This became clear when I studied videotapes made by psychologist Bruce Dorval of children and adults talking to their same-sex best friends. I found that at every age, the girls and women faced each other directly, their eyes anchored on each other's faces. At every age, the boys and men sat at angles to each other and looked elsewhere in the room, periodically glancing at each other. They were obviously attuned to each other, often mirroring each other's movements. But the tendency of men to face away can give women the impression they aren't listening even when they are. A young woman in college was frustrated: Whenever she told her boyfriend she wanted to talk to him, he would lie down on the floor, close his eyes, and put his arm over his face. This signaled to her, "He's taking a nap." But he insisted he was listening extra hard. Normally, he looks around the room, so he is easily distracted. Lying down and covering his eyes helped him concentrate on what she was…

Communication between males and females has always been somewhat complicated. Because we are arguing that males and females have different cultures we wanted to take a look at what some of these differences might be. According to our research the inherent differences between male and female culture are the different roles that society holds for them and the ways these roles lead to different communication styles. The stereotypes that men and women grow up with affect the types of ways in which they communicate. We first wanted to take a look at how they specifically differ while men and women are arguing or having normal conversations. We also looked at the different types of networks that men and women share. These networks also differ and as do the reasonings for their formation. Although we do not think that men and women need to change their cultures to effectively communicate, we do think that better communication is possible. One of the researchers we took a look at was Deborah Tannen. According to Tannen the reason that men and women do not communicate well is that men and women use language differently. Women take the attitude that conversation is to explore solutions to common problems while men concern themselves more with getting information and hard data from conversation. Tannen states that what women look for in communication is human connection, while men consider status to be most important. They are looking for independence and are constantly looking for higher accomplishments. Intimacy threatens this independence, so men have a tendency to avoid it. One of the old sayings about women is that they talk more than men. It turns out that it is not necessarily true. Women seem to talk more in private conversations than do men. Women do not generally have a fear of intimacy and therefore are much more open with one another during private conversations. It is more difficult for women to use this type of communication style in the public arena. In that…

“She’s the talker in our family!” This statement said by a man about his wife was very ironic to most of the people at the party that night, being that the man was doing most of the talking and offering ideas while his wife sat silently in the corner. This arousing anecdote in Deborah Tannen’s essay, “Sex, Lies and Conversation: Why Is It So Hard For Men and Women to Talk to Each Other” portrays the truth of the relationships of married couples by revealing that American men tend to talk more than women in public; however, they barely communicate at home with their spouses. Through the use of ethos, logos, and pathos Tannen provides a strong argument directed specifically at married couples in discussing the communication problems between a husband and wife and how to resolve them without the marriage leading to divorce.…

Divorce is defined as “the formal dissolution of marriage” (Collins, 1978, p. 1). Nearly half of marriages end in divorce. There could be various reasons as to why a relationship diminishes. These reasons could include premarital cohabitation or in other words living together before marriage, marrying at a young age, and finally the presence of children. All three of these reasons are said to be the most significant of circumstances that lead to the end of relationships. To better understand the reasons of divorce, the text discusses 5 different types of marriages. Conflict habituated marriages, devitalized marriages, passive congenial marriages, vital marriages, and total marriages. These 5 types of marriages show the different outlooks of families on a spectrum of most likely to divorce and most likely to stay married. Divorce does not just affect the man and woman that are in the midst of separating, this subject has many factors that can be affected such as the common factor; children.…
