Sex (Madonna)
Sex is a coffee table book written by Madonna, with photographs taken by Steven Meisel Studio and film frames shot by Fabien Baron. The book was edited by Glenn O'Brien and was released on October 21, 1992, by Warner Books, Maverick and Callaway Books. Approached with an idea for a book on erotic photographs, Madonna expanded on the idea and conceived the book and its content. Shot in early 1992 in New York City and Miami, the locations ranged from hotels and burlesque theaters, to the streets of Miami. The photographs were even stolen before publishing, but were quickly recovered.
The book had a range of influences – from punk rock to earlier fashion iconoclasts like Guy Bourdin and his surrealism, and Helmut Newton, in its stylized, sado-masochistic look. Sex has photographs that feature adult content and softcore pornographic as well as simulations of sexual acts, including sadomasochism and analingus. Madonna wrote the book as a character named "Mistress Dita", inspired by 1930s film actress Dita Parlo. It also includes cameos by actress Isabella Rossellini, rappers Big Daddy Kane and Vanilla Ice, model Naomi Campbell, gay porn star Joey Stefano, actor Udo Kier, socialite Tatiana von Fürstenberg, and nightclub owner Ingrid Casares.
The packaging for the book is made of aluminium, which was Madonna's idea, and is spiral bound and enclosed in a Mylar sheet. Due to the scandalous nature of the photographs and the media mayhem surrounding it from the initial preview of the book, Madonna did not have to promote Sex, except for a pre-release party and some television specials. Her publishers were extremely apprehensive about the release as well as its commercial potential. Sex was released alongside her fifth studio album Erotica, which was released a day earlier.
The extremely controversial book was received negatively by both critics and fans of the singer, who felt she had gone too far. Despite this it was a commercial success, managing to sell over 150,000

The only thing in this book that I did not agree with is the fact that Darwin is her hero. Because of my beliefs in Christianity I did not agree with this part of the book. The author did not dwell on this at all so I do not think it impacted the overall message that this book is trying to get across. There are several ways to interpret this book. Which is why I think it is loved by such a wide variety of people. Some people do not agree…

In novels it is common for the concept of love or sexuality to be present. This idea can present itself in many forms, and in both Jerzy Kosinski’s book Being There and Angela Carter’s book The Bloody Chamber this is illustrated. In both books the concept of love and sexuality can be seen in both dark and light contexts, with highly varying situations. In Being There and The Bloody Chamber the presence of genuine love, a lack of genuine love, and sexuality are all explored.…

Soon after, Bob Guccione, the publisher of Penthouse, publically announced that the September 1984 issue of his magazine would feature the pictures. He was sneaky and paid the photographer of the images for the rights to distribute them without Vanessa’s consent. Vanessa was distraught by this, she worked hard to get to where she was only to see it all come crashing down in front of her eyes. She won countless pageants just to even enter Miss America, and kept herself healthy and good looking to win the pageant. These haunting images came back and destroyed her…

There have been several instances in history where a woman’s societal and personal existence revolved around her relationship with her husband. In “The Storm”, Chopin discusses women’s sexual openness in correlation with their husbands and status in society. “I felt sick and dizzy. Not only did the cover of the screenplay feature a martini glass with a soother around the stem, like the cover of the American edition of my book, the words ‘Knocked’ and ‘Up’ were in two different colors, the same as my book cover.” (Eckler, 2007). This being Rebecca Eckler’s first reaction when finding out the plot of her famous book Knocked Up, became a huge hit in the movies, and she received none of the box office revenues for it. Being a very important factor that was not taken lightly, plagiarism stands out clearly and obvious that the movie Knocked Up. The movie was produced by Judd Apatow, had copied the book for the reasons: The character profiles seem to be the same; the storyline seems to be identical with both, and the effect of this situation is unfair for Rebecca’s side, especially that Judd Apatow has been accused before.…

Fifty million copies. That is approximately how many copies of To Kill a Mockingbird that have been sold. That is how many people this book has graced. Barack Obama called To Kill a Mockingbird “an unforgettable tale of courage and conviction [that] still tells us something about who we are as a people, and the common values we share.” Another notable former president of the United States, George W. Bush, praised this novel. He claimed that the novel “influenced our country for the better” and also called it a “gift to the entire world”. I have to admit that I agree with both of…
