The Kaiser Family Foundation reports show that almost two thirds of all television shows air overtly sexual material. Studies show that being exposed to drug use, sex or violence onscreen can make them more acceptable in reality. In 2002 Madeline A. Dalton and her colleagues at Dartmouth Medical School analyzed R-rated films and their influence in connection with children, the media and risky behaviors. Surveys were conducted on about 4,500 students, ages 10 to 14. Data was collected on many factors influencing their lives (parenting characteristics, school performances, and general rebelliousness.) In this study they found 35 percent of the teens watching r-rated films had smoked and 46 percent tried alcohol. The teens that didn’t watch r-rated films were at one third the risk of smoking and drinking with all factors accounted…
Adults, who watched sex and violence on television regularly, may become desensitized. Adults accustom themselves to the nature of this kind of behavior and it could make them to be desensitized to violence as well as the sexual contents. This type of media could lead to a negative behavior and mislead a human being in society. I recommendations that the problem of media portrayal of sex and violence might be minimized by having programs such as entertainment and education programs which them embeds those desirable behavior of audience in order to minimize the issues of the portrayal of sex and…
The effects of media portrayal of sexuality on adolescent’s sexual lives are enormous because, media in our society today portrays acts of sexuality as routine and probable. They show young girls as being enticing or promiscuous and portrays young men as sexual predators or manipulative into pressuring young ladies into having sex. The media have shown acceptance of gays and lesbians than years prior, but with this the media knows that younger viewers of television, radio, and internet are more venerable than its adult viewer’s ("Wjm Western Journal of Medicine", 2000).…
The rigor of the data collection and analysis in this study plausibly leads to an assumption of causality between the decrease in teen childbearing and the reality television program even allowing for some unmeasured intermediary factor. From a public health perspective, it would be interesting to examine the attributes which were most effective in changing the sociologic culture to allow broader application. For example, was it the mode of delivery, the content, the affiliation with viewership or these and other factors combined responsible for…

Technologies evolve, but sex and violence have always been and remain hot button issues in the media. The pace of the new technological change can be so great that we can no longer wait on formal media effects research to guide our personal decisions. There have been many changes that have been taken place with media sex and violence today since I was a child. I believe that the media technologies have increased the negative effects of sex and violence on children and adults today. This paper will discuss why and provide examples of how it has an effect on adults and children because it’s not only an adult issue. This paper will also discuss recommendations that can be made to help minimize these problems.…
One of the biggest problems health experts face today is the growing rate of STDs and unwanted pregnancies. This has become one of the largest health concerns in the United States, especially among young adults and college students. Many college students are not educated enough about the risks associated with contracting STDs, and are not knowledgeable about general healthy sexual practices. In addition, other influences such as the types of media college students engage in could aid to these growing rates. This study specifically aims to examine if media such as TV shows could possibly influence college students’ attitudes and beliefs towards using contraceptive methods. The media plays a big role in distributing information about sex, STDs, pregnancies, and preventative methods through various vehicles. Therefore, it is crucial to identify some of the reasons why TV shows could be a possible influence such as the type of TV show genre college students engage in the most, how much time they…

Sex has become a prominent topic for television in this generation. Rebecca L. Collins, a senior behavioral scientist who graduated from UCLA, claims in the essay “Does Watching Sex on Television Influence Teens’ Sexual Activity?” that sex on television influences the early initiation of sex for teens. She believes that the leverage that television has over teens can easily be avoided and provides ways to decrease teens’ sexual activity. However, television has a positive influence on teens’ sexual behavior. Her argument can easily be disproved with the support of shows that appear on television today. Although Collins defends her argument with studies and research, sexual talk on television has a positive impact on teens. Lastly,…
A poll by Newsweek stated that sexual moderation and fidelity are normal for both married people and for those who live together. In contrast, 7 out of 8 televised sexual encounters involve extramarital sex (Newsweek, 1994). This trend is startling when compared to the fact that children spend more time watching television than they spend in school. According to the American Psychological Association, a typical child sees 8,000 murders and 100,000 acts of violence on TV before graduating from elementary school (Nation, 1994).…

Today, with the technology available, people are easily connected to the media whether it is for the news, the season premiere of an upcoming televised series, or the recent release of a video from a YouTube producer. Along with the mainstream media, people are flooded with hidden messages and exposed to unwanted materials. The modern American culture is based on the contents of media and is recycled through a process of demands and contributions. As a result, the American culture is exposed to a steady increase of sexualization within mainstream media, especially the hyper-sexualization of women (Task Force, 4). The American culture is exposing future generations to a world where sex is mainstream and popularized. Through the social learning…
Americans way of life has become entangled with television that an entire new approach of acting has been created. Television has been present since the 1950’s, and has only been growing ever sense. It did not take long for the television industry to branch out and take full advantage of this technology’s potential. With the advancement in programming and increased financial support, the world and its marketplaces were brought into the living rooms of viewers. With this, society became exposed to commercial marketing, situation comedies and drama, sporting events, music and theatre, game and talk shows and world news. Television is one of the main sources of entertainment, and is a continuous presence in most Americans' lives. Geoffrey Beattie is a psychology professor; his main theory on television viewing is that we process audio and visual stimuli better than either text or images alone.
