Sexism In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
From the beginning of time, sexism has greatly impacted and hindered women from all walks of life. This was particularly true in America’s history. In the 1930’s, females were treated as though they were strictly sex objects. In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, this case is evident when Curley's wife was objectified and disrespected on multiple occasions. Although Curley’s wife is considered an antagonist of the story, she is actually a victim of sexism based on how the men on the ranch acted toward her and took away her basic

All of these derogatory words were used to negatively describe one of the few female characters in John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men. This story is centered on two men, named Lennie and George, who work on a ranch in an effort to achieve their dream of owning their own land. While attempting to reach their dream they meet few women, almost all of whom were painted in a negative light. This demonstrates the point made by John Steinbeck that women are trouble and will only lead to conflict. More specifically, that the female sexuality will cause many problems in a ranch setting.…

Lennie, Crooks, and Candy are all on the outsides because they aren't your typical man on the farm. People like Slim, George, and Curley are middle aged, white, and are smart men. Lennie has a mental disability, Crooks is black, and Candy is old, causing them to be the outsiders. When everyone leaves, Lennie finds himself petting the newborn pups because they are soft. Crooks is always doing small jobs on the farm like when he assists Slim with putting the tar on the horse to repair his foot. When he is alone, he is probably working or spending time in his stall alone. Candy can't do much work because he lost his hand, so he confides much of his time with his dog. When Carlson kills the dog, Candy doesn't know his purpose.…

“Truth is everybody is going to hurt you: you just gotta find the ones worth suffering for” (Bob Marley). The novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, was set in the Great depression. In the novel George has to deal with Lenny every single day and it’s not easy, but he loves him and he just has to accept that Lenny is part of his life. In this book, society was frustrating. People were very sexist, and instead of coming together and helping each other everyone kept to themselves this is also known as isolation. Also, during this time people who suffered from mental and physical disabilities were often isolated and faced discrimination. Steinbeck identifies many societal problems during the Great Depression, and brings them to light in his novella Of Mice and Men.…

Flawless skin, small waists, the unattainable idea of perfection. The idea that a woman should be the icon of feminine beauty, a brainless robot that’s great at housework and pleasing their husband. has lasted through generations upon generations, and even continued in the 1930s, when The Great Depression was reeking havoc on everyone’s lives. Instead of letting equally smart women work along side of men to bring the stocks up, they were still told to stay home and be the mothers and wives that they should. This idea continued into Steinbeck’s famous book, Of Mice and Men. Throughout the novel, Steinbeck subtly reiterates his belief that white men are superior to every other race and gender. In my opinion, the misogynistic portrayal of Curley’s…

In John Steinbeck’s classic novel Of Mice and Men we are left with a question, “Now what do you suppose is eatin’ them two?” At the time Carlson did not understand the pain that George was going through after shooting his best friend. Many people also aren’t aware that John Steinbeck wasn’t just trying to tell a story but he was also trying to focus on the many injustices that surrounded him. Monumental topics like racism, sexism ageism, and discrimination towards the mentally slow. Constantly we see he comes back to these themes. John not only wanted to tell us a great story but he wanted to make us aware of the injustices that are very present in our everyday lives. One of the many themes he constantly comes back to in his novel is sexism, he tells us about Curley’s wife and how she is constantly pegged as a flirt when all she wanted is a friend, he also pointed out that women are discriminated because she never had a name and was looked at like property, then finally at the end of the novel after she dies no one mourns for her. Throughout his novel John was trying to help us realize how we treat people in our society, and the price we have to pay for it in the end.…

In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck one of the main themes is stereotyping. A stereotype is when people are grouped as being the same. There has always been stereotyping, and while some people break stereotypes or do not believe in them, there is still a number of people who do. Being stereotyped can make people want to act like what they are stereotyped as. Being stereotyped can slowly change how you act and who you are. Trying to break stereotypes, Lennie and George, Slim, Crooks, and Curley’s wife go against the norm for people like them in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.…

Throughout the course of this essay I am going to examine how Steinbeck presents the character of Curley’s wife in ‘Of mice and men’, through the way she is treated, spoken to and spoken about as well as her own dialogue and actions. Curley’s wife lives with and is married to Curley and is the only women on the ranch; therefore I will be using her as a representation of how women were treated and portrayed in the 1930s.…

Throughout history, women have been seen as inferior. During the Great Depression, women were not granted the same rights and freedoms as men. Curley’s wife experiences many of the same injustices that women did during that time. The negative perception of women develops in Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men due to the fact that Curley’s wife is not given a real identity or a purpose throughout the novel.…

Discrimination does not prove a difference within two races, it only creates a division between the two. One becomes superior and the other is inferior. in the world. Although one group of society may hold more power than the other, it does not give them the right to discriminate others. Not only does the world reveal reality to us as society, we also expose reality to the world. To add, this superior race distinguishes society based on race, class and abilities. In John Steinbeck’s novel “ Of Mice & Men” he uses characterization to demonstrate how society separates people by color, distinguishes them by class and neglects those who have disabilities although what they really need is attention.…

When Carlson says “What the hell ya suppose is eatin them two guys?” what is significant about that line is that he is saying what will eat them other than the birds picking at their bodies. I think they wanted to know what was going to happen to their bodies instead of just laying there dead what was going to happen to them. I think that as a person Carlson has no feelings or emotions of other people. I would infer that most of the men are feeling is some sorrow but carelessness. The thinking factor would be everyone was probably wondering what just happened and thinking about why it happened, but they know why, they are just shocked by the factor that Lennie had just killed Curley’s wife. Cury however is sorrowful and sad that this all happened and he just wants to forget.…

The suppression against women is an extremely important issue to this day. Women have been treated as the inferior gender for almost as long as recorded history. Sexism was typical in the 1920’s, the time period in which this novel, Of Mice and Men, takes place. Though its frequency is familiar to Curley’s wife, it is quite damaging. She shows recurrent outbursts of distress and tells of decisions she has made in her life that tell the reader that she is strongly affected by this sexist phenomena. These factors show that she has changed her lifestyle and her attitude, due to society’s view of women. It is clear that Curley’s wife is a victim of sexism as evidenced by her shifting attitude and loss of identity.…

There is an issue with sexism in "Of Mice and Men". There is only 1 character who is a woman, and there are a couple of minor mentions of other women. There is a "cathouse" referred to that the ranch workers frequent, where women are used to satisfy their sexual cravings. Women are depicted as conniving while at the same time subservient to men. They are considered either as weak or helpless or something put on Earth. The only women is character is Curly's Wife. Her world is ruled by men and she is always lonely. Her flirtatiousness is a result of her desperate need for companionship. She uses the only tool she has that will interest the men. The second concern is her lack of a name which seems to objectify her. Steinbeck is revealing a world where a human being is classed as a possession rather than a person. Curley owns his wife, she is not a partner in their union but rather just one more advantage being the boss' son brings. Curley has…

In the novel Of Mice and Men we are made aware of the role of women and viewpoints towards women in 1930’s American society. Not only attitudes to women in general, but Steinbeck also makes the reader aware of the different types of women and their ‘roles’ and expectations during this period of American history. Women were almost classified and Steinbeck presents women as prostitutes, nurturers or married women similar to Curley’s wife. I will be exploring how Steinbeck uses the novel to present the themes of gender inequality and how it was widely considered by society that women were inferior to men.…
