Sexual Harassment in the Workplace Famed activist attorney Anita Hill once said, “But the issue of sexual harassment is not the end of it. There are other issues - political issues, gender issues - that people need to be educated about.” Young adults in today’s society tend to mainly think only of themselves or only what is happening to them at that moment, especially when it comes down to sexual harassment. One doesn’t think about how bad it could be until it happens to him or her personally. If young adults between the ages of eighteen and twenty- four understood and were more educated about sexual harassment, maybe it could somehow be prevented or helped. Not only that, but with becoming more knowledgeable, those young adults could better themselves and gain possibly a bit more importance and maybe even respect from others. Sexual harassment is something that many people don’t just sit and talk about. The subject usually only comes up if it has happened recently, which most people think it doesn’t happen all that often. Those people are wrong. In the United States, someone is sexually harassed or assaulted every two minutes. Any and every person could at some point be sexually harassed anywhere at any time. That can become a very frightening thought to most people. Young adults that aren’t educated about sexual harassment need to know things like how sexual harassment laws are not always enforced, some countries don’t even have laws for it, and the victims are men as well as women. Although there are laws for sexual harassment, they aren’t always enforced and the harasser isn’t always punished. Every employment place has a department called Human Resources. This department handles all of the employees’ problems, sometimes does hiring, training, and more. When a case of sexual harassment has happened, the employee must go to the Human Resources department for the complaint. Sometimes, especially when there is no proof that anything of the sort happened,

    I will first start by defining sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is broken up into two behaviors. As defined by the EEOC the two types of harassments are quid pro quo and hostile environment. These are two different types of harassments that go on in the work place but they can both happen to you.     Unfortunately in our society, we have been gradually increasing sexual liberties in the ways we dress, talk, and act in any and every public venue. This sexual liberation from both genders has helped to blur the boundaries of sexual harassment. Balswick and Balswick define sexual harassment as “any form of unsolicited language or touching containing sexual overtones. It includes sexual jokes, suggestive talk and unsolicited physical advances (Balswick and Balswick, 2008).” Based on that definition and what I know of many work places, especially hospitals, outsiders could perceive that sexual harassment is alive and well on any given day. In addition, of the approximately 900,000 children who are maltreated each year, 9% are sexually abused. According to the Crime Victim Research and Treatment Center 1.3 adult women are sexually assaulted in the United States every minute. Of these assaults 84% of the attacks occur by someone the victim knows. The Senate Judiciary Committee the United States sighted the United States as having the highest rate of sexual assaults per capita in the world. Unfortunately the majority of sexual assaults that occur against women go unreported. Only 31% of sexual assaults that occurred in 1996 were reported to law enforcement authorities. The problem of sexual assault is increasing. In the year 2000 the number of sexual assaults against women had increased by 16.5%.…
