For the first phase, the excitement phase, we will look at the differences and similarities of males and females. This phase can go on for several hours. For both males and females, muscle tension increases, heart rate quickens, blood pressure begins to rise, breathing becomes accelerated, skin may become flushed, and nipples become erect or hardened. Some of the similarities seen during the plateau phase include the breath rate increases, the heart rate becomes more rapid, the muscle continue to tense up and blood pressure increases more. During this phase, due to the increase in muscle tension the hands and feet may start to spasm. For females, the vagina continues to swell from the increase of the blood flowing and then the wall of the vagina starts to turn a dark purple. Also during this phase the clitoris becomes more sensitive. Because of its sensitivity it may cause some pain for women. The clit will retract under the hood to avoid to much stimulation. For males, the only difference in this phase is that the testicles withdraw in to the scrotum.
The third phase is the orgasm phase. This is the climax of the sexual response cycle. The orgasm phase usually only lasts for a few seconds. For both males and females, involuntary muscle movement occur. The heart rate and blood pressure are extremely high and may cause an increased breathing rate. There is also a very sudden relaxation state. Some men or women may notice a rash over the entire body. For females, there is a contraction of the vagina.
