Even though the parental influences in the household should have more knowledge of what their children are watching on television and what the children are doing on the internet, the effects of the media’s portrayal on sexuality on adolescents has a negative and positive influence, the positive effect being that the media is coming up with better ways to inform children about the different types of contraception and the consequences of not using protection in the social media, and the negative effects of the media’s portrayal of sexuality on television does not go into the same amount of detail because of topics being controversial.
The positive effects that the media’s portrayal on sexuality is that they are coming up with more ways to inform our youth of the different options of contraception and the consequences of not using protection such as STD’s on the internet as …show more content…
well as in magazines. The media has internet web sites such as “www.goaskalice.columbia.edu” and “www.sxetc.org”, where you can go get questions you may have about sex answered, as well as being able to talk to someone who is educated to talk to someone about sexual issues. Another example that shows the positive effects of the media’s portrayal of sexuality is the way the magazines such as “Teen People” and “YM” are coming up with more articles to inform our youth on sex.
The negative effects the media’s portrayal of sexuality is that while showing these happy teen sexual moments they are not fully informing of contraception and the consequences of not using it on television.
An example of this would be the show “Secret Life of an American Teenager” this show is based on a girl in high school who ends up pregnant but they then show her as being able to not only finish school at her high school but they make you believe that it is easy and that your life is perfect. The happily ever after is not always the case in this scenario and the youth should not be given the image that it is. Another example that shows the negative effects of the media’s portrayal of sexuality on our youth is the show “Smash”, they are showing young adults in sexually relationships without informing them of the protection that needs to go along with it, because of the negative influences our youth is not getting a true picture of the consequences of having sex and their images of the situation is expected to turn out like the television
shows.
So you can see that although the parental influences in the household should have more knowledge of what their children are watching on television and what the children are doing on the internet, the effects the media’s portrayal of sexuality on adolescents has a negative and positive influence for two main reasons. The first being the availability of getting information you want about sex not only on the internet, and the second being able to get information in magazines about topics related to sex.
