At the end of the book, Shabanu thought of fleeing because she did not want to marry Rahim-Sahib. Shabanu wanted her independence and freedom. At first, she hoped the wind or rain will come and hide the camels' footprints so Dadi cannot find her, but there was no wind or rain. On the way of going to Aunt Sharma’s place, Mithoo broke his leg, so she thought, "I pray that Dadi will find us soon and that we can get Mithoo back to the toba on Xhush Dil's back" (2380). The thought of getting beaten to death when she was found vanished away because of the fear that the jackals would kill Mithoo stopped her from continuing on. She shows that she is protective of Mithoo by giving up on what she hoped for.
When Shabanu tried to protect Mithoo, her parents saw that as disobedience, but Shabanu was showing her responsibility and maturity. She acts and worries about Mithoo like she is his mother. When she tries to protect Mithoo, she ends up in a few situations that risk her life, but she still decides to keep Mithoo safe instead of keeping herself safe. Shabanu did not always make wise decisions. However, her decisions she made for Mithoo prove that she became somewhat more responsible and caring, which means that she started to mature, and she will give fine care and sacrifice herself for her own
