Shades of Grey

At the beginning of section four, Eddie travels to the Grey Zone with Jane. Once there, Jane introduces Eddie to Clifton, her brother who has been sleeping with Violet. Jane and Eddie haven’t been in the Grey Zone for long when the Yellow prefects, Sally Gamboge, Bunty McMustard, Penelope and Courtland show up unexpectedly. The yellows claim to have business in the Grey Zone, helping Eddie carry out his chair census as he will be leaving for High Saffron the following day and no one can be certain that he will return to ever finish it. In the attic, Eddie discovers one of the supernumeraries, an old woman who is not only blind, but also

Though she can drive in the dark, she doesn’t want to reveal that to Violet and Tommo. Eddie perches on the front of the car and uses the flares that Yewberry gave him for light the rest of the way home.
On the way back to East Carmine, Violet apologizes for what had happened earlier that morning and Eddie says that he will forgive her if she gives her 700 merits to Jane to which she agrees. Eddie informed Violet that he was going to marry Jane and Violet gets upset. Once back in East Carmine, the youths are scheduled to take their Ishiharas. Eddie meets Jane’s parents. His Ishihara score says he is over 87% red while Jane’s test results indicate that she is 12% yellow and 14% blue, making her a green. Shades Of White Summary

Shades of White is an ethnographic study of two high schools. One, "Valley Groves High School," was suburban, and the "whitest" high school in the region. Here the student body was comprised of non-Hispanic whites (83 percent), Hispanics (7 percent), Asians (5 percent), Filipinos (2 percent), and African Americans (2 percent). The other, "Clavey High," was metropolitan and more thoroughly multiracial--African American (54 percent), Asian American (23 percent), white (12 percent), Hispanic (8 percent), Filipino (2 percent), Pacific Islander (1 percent), and Native American (1 percent). Perry examines the making and living of whiteness in school life, asking about its formation through white students' interactions with one another and with peers of color. In this book the schoolyard is as important as are school curriculum, faculty, and administrators. Meanwhile, the familial and larger social contexts from which students arrive to complete each school day are deemed not so much stable, preexisting settings, as sites in relation to which selves and others must be reconceived and remade.…

Primo Levi was captured at the age of 24 by the Fascist Militia on December 13, 1943. Although Levi was a chemist with a degree, graduating from Turin in 1941, summa cum laude, he was treated just like all the other prisoners until his skill was proven and gave him a longer chance to survive. Because he was a Jew, he was sent to a detention camp along with the other English and American prisoners-of-war who were also “people not approved of by the new-born Fascist Republic” (Levi, 14). Later, he was boarded onto a train with many other prisoners, where they learned they were going to Auschwitz. The people appeared to just be “two groups of strange individuals… walk[ing] in squads, in rows of three…. It was all incomprehensible and mad, but…

Eddie has maintained his family through life and this fact has made him overprotective and suspicious of anyone who may come between them, especially Catherine. Eddie’s feelings for Catherine are clearly indicated in quotations such as ‘he envelops her with his eyes.’ This desire is hidden from many of the other characters but the fact that this is strong enough to ultimately make Eddie betray his family by reporting Rodolpho and Marco to the immigration police reveals how destructive and obsessive desires like this can be as they blind Eddie. The theme of betrayal is seen by this act of Eddie, blinded by jealousness.…
