The book analyzed is I Shall Not Hate; A Gaza Doctor’s Journey, By Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish.
Abuelaish is a Palestinian physician and an expert on infertility. Abuelaish has won many peace and humanitarian awards, one being the 2012 Calgary Peace Prize . This book takes the reader into what it is really like living in a state of constant war. Israel and Gaza have been disputing for a long time over land . After WW2, the Jewish people wanted their own land, which was once Palestine. Other countries like Israel did not like this and so they decided to go to war to gain control. The author tells his story throughout the entire book. He begins with his life as a child and all of the hardships he had to face. He, as the oldest son, had to work instead of going to school, which did not like. He would have rather gone to school and have gotten that proper education. He then talks about himself going to school and studying and practicing in many different places. Throughout this book he switches from past to present to give his opinion and how the particular situation affected him. He then goes on to tell the story of how he and his wife met, got married and later on had children. Towards the end, Abuelaish writes about his daughters and niece being killed and how he reacted at this time. “They shelled my house. They killed my daughters. What have we done? All I could think of was, This is the end. This is the end.” Abuelaish, a medical doctor has written this book to help the people living in Gaza and to influence others around the world. Like Abuelaish he is arguing that people coming together can overcome and overpower the main power in a certain area. However, Abuelaish is arguing more about how people need to stop hating and start respecting each other. Chappatte is arguing that if one, who is responsible with it, gets a pencil and starts to draw about issues around them, that can actually bring people together and out power any leader . Chappatte makes a good argument by telling his stories of how he has helped this happen in various areas. He went to places like The Ivory Coast and brought people with completely different backgrounds to draw cartoons of things happening in their country. Although they continuously were arguing, they came out having mostly the same ideas . They had similar thoughts on issues in their country and how to solve those issues, which is important for Chappatte’s idea. He thinks this will shed light to others and make them unite, as it did for the cartoonists. They fought at first, but eventually came together to fight for the same result. Although this could work to a point, Abuelaish has the stronger argument. He although does not give examples of his idea directly working, gives reasons why it would work.
