Shane Koyczan's Poem Move Pen Move
My performance was inspired by my favorite spoken-word poet Shane Koyczan and his poem Move Pen Move that is dedicated to his mother who passed away because of cancer. I chose this poem because I identify with it a lot regarding my personal experience. I was aware of the fact that seemingly poetry and cruelty contradict each other. I associate ‘poetry’ with something gentle, lyrical whereas word ‘cruelty’ is associated with something anxious and unpleasurable. I decided to create a performance that is a combination of both. This idea seemed to be controversial and unconventional. People have a tendency to pay more attention to something that intrigue them.
The main theme of my performance is death. There is one main character, a young girl

In terms of props, I tried to stay minimalistic as well. My main props were chair, knife, wooden board teddy bear, white piece of cloth and roses. In terms of lighting, I used spotlight in red and white colors. My costume and make up were designed by me. I used a white, long dress that I cut and modified into a dirty piece of cloth with many holes. The make up was mainly based on the dirt that was spread on my body in order to give the audience an indirect clue of what could have possibly happen with the character before the action on the stage. During performance I was in control of my body language, using concentric and eccentric movements. I played a lot with the contrast, not only contrast between body movements and gestures but also contrast in the articulation of my voice, experimenting a lot with the escalation and de-escalation. For instance, parts 2 and 3, when from screaming and crying I move into silence and soft expression of the phrase “I wrote her …show more content…
I chose to experiment with the combination of two types of body behavior: concentric and eccentric. I learnt about these types of movements during my theater class last year. Concentric movements are very limited movements, not exaggerated whereas eccentric movements are the opposite. I wanted to proof that cruelty does not necessarily has to be expressed only by intense movements on the stage. I wanted to give the audience the feeling of cruelty from different perspectives. In my performance, I showed this contrast through acting on different levels of body movements; from impulsive character throwing things away to very humble and calm.
Firstly, I tried to understand better the importance of movements in Theatre of Cruelty by reading carefully paragraphs of Artaud’s work Theatre and Its Doubles. Then I started watching videos about impulsive movements in Theatre of Cruelty and I found one exercise in which there is a visible escalation of movements. Here there is one of the links I used

When I first saw the play I payed no attention to the costumes but enjoy the overall play, which mean that costume designers did a good job. According to professor Landis, she says that costumes should not be the main focus but improve the overall environment of the play. Once I look back to picture of the play, I start noticing costumes. I find it beautiful how all the characters wore emerald, lively clothing to add to the wonder of Emerald City. I also notice that Elphaba has the famous wiked witch hat but the costume designer made modification that make it appear like the orignial hat, but it looks more suiting to a beautiful younge women. This production used a lot of change of set design as well as the use of expensive effects. For instant, during the scene were there is flying monkeys, the audience not only see a million monkeys appearing as if they are going to take flight but the huge dragon on top of the stage comes alive. During this scene the light technicitan uses red lights on the stage and the background is Elsabub castle. The use of red lights, loud sounds, and the…

I remember when I first experienced goosebumps raise on my arms and send a shiver through my body, simply because the words leaving the speaker's lips left such an imprint on me. I didn’t think that a simple sentence could bring tears to my eyes, could cause me to react in any physical way. I didn’t even know the author. Yet, it still amazes me anytime I react to such a poem. The emotions that the author pours into every word and every syllable is astounding. Each pause and breath tell a story on their own. I knew that I had to try. I wanted to make people feel the way like I did when I first heard them, but because it was my words that made them react.…

The object of the first task set was to create a performance in response to the stimulus given. The stimulus we received was a short passage from a story describing a circus, the description allowed us to freely explore our different interpretations because it was a broad and different approach to the typically happy and childlike setting of a circus. As a whole the class responded with quite abstract and solemn pieces, I feel the physical theatre reflected the tone of the stimulus well, all of the responses tended to lean towards drawing fear from the audience, for example instead of limiting the use of space to a typical theatre styled front on stage setting the use of proxemics broadened when groups branched out and included the audiences space during their performance, this gave the piece a threatening edge and popped the comfortable bubble that the audience would’ve usually been used to and expected.…

There are many different choices that have been made to the set to alter the effects of the how the play is presented. The stage was set out in a professional manner with the use of props being very creative. The use of the area being divided into three separate stage areas made the use of scene changing easier and helped the audience to understand the setting. The stage that we were provided with for the production had very limited space and little room to work with but we used what we had well. The costumes that were use were very simple and effective. With…

For example, the fight scene between Jay and an opposing hockey player had suspenseful music playing in the background as well as the lighting which was brighter than I had seen throughout the whole play and was mainly focused on Jay, this caused me to get pulled straight into this incredibly dramatic scene. The costume design was great at making the actors look like teenagers working their way to the positions they dream of having even with a few struggles on the way. During the scene where Meredith was bitterly reacting to how many views Rosie’s video was getting, I felt as if the eyes that popped up in the background were a little unnecessary even if i knew that the eyes were supposed to represent the amount of different people from all over the world watching her video. However there were moments where I wished that the actors could have had a few more props because whenever Jay went to play hockey he would wear the same thing he would in any other…

Visually the production was very clever, humorous, and artistic. The lighting was clever and appropriate for each scene. The costumes through-out the entire show were incredibly striking and suited each character and scene perfectly! In particular, Mrs Lovett’s costume and hair were brilliant and really brought the vibrancy of her character out visually. The set was very cleverly made, with the two levels of Mrs Lovett’s pie shop with the trap door at the top where the victims fall down. It was painted very effectively and looked quite realistic, yet humorous. The stairs used to get to the top level are the same stairs that were used in almost every scene, but not only as a simple staircase as they created the opportunity for the audience to imagine them as something else. For example, when Johanna was singing from her bedroom she was standing on the staircase, yet it was obvious to the audience that she wasn’t actually on a staircase in the story. This imaginative theme continued through-out the production in with many of the props being over exaggerated in a funny way. The limbs were clearly made of foam, yet it suited in with the whole atmosphere of the show. It was made even funnier with Mrs Lovett just carelessly chucking them into the oven. The oven was another stand-out piece of set. It looked incredibly effective with the coloured lights and the smoke coming from it. Effects such as that really helped the whole show step-up another level. The only effect that was not quite fitting was a loud…
