Sharlene think about what her brother’s thinking about. This question is completely based on point of view, and following the footsteps of parents, because many parents consider what they do to be right, and what they don’t do as wrong. Greg is simply doing something different, and his father Jack, considers this to be taboo and irresponsible. “Be something. Be something. That’s all I ever get from Dad” this sentence describes how his father is always demanding Greg to do something he considers proper, such as entering university and earning a degree. However, Greg feels that he should be allowed to make his own decisions. When Sharlene asks, “So you never want to be anything?” Greg looks as if he is ready to kill someone. We can see from his reaction that, though he is not going to continue university or get a degree, he will still be successful, but in his eyes. The word “nothing” describes the way Sharlene was brought up, how she was taught that money and social class meant something, but self contentment was not important in life, because that did not bring success to anyone. She realizes that Greg has defined his own success, and when she begins to see this, she describes it as “My brain feels all twisted, like I’ve just discovered I’ve been staring out of the wrong side of my hear all my life.” Suddenly, Sharlene sees what Greg sees. She can see that his definition…

In Smash Mouth’s “All Starts,” a loser recalls others doubting his competence and intelligence. Then, he talks about a sequence of random descriptions of his life; being annoyed with rules, starting something new with enthusiasm, having a hedonistic philosophy. These presumably occurred in the persona’s adolescence as he sounds immature compared to when he later encourages listeners with confidence. For example, he advises to take the “back streets” since we’ll never know that we’ll be successful if we didn’t try it. There are many vague moments in the song that are unclear whether he’s talking in first, second, third person; regardless, I believe it paints a clear picture.…

    Looking for alaska

Alaska acts as a whirlwind in Mile’s life. Changing who he is and dealing with that is the heart of the book. It’s not the controversial side-events of a teen’s life (smoking, drinking, cursing, having “sexual relations”) that define a person or this book. It is the lesson of the mercurial nature of life and that change is an active verb not a static noun. High school is a time of life in which everything is in flux, your body, your moods, your relationships and your future all while you’re trapped in the “labyrinth of suffering.” Teens need to live in the moment and not to plan ahead. Change is not the one event in life from which nothing will ever be the same. To live is to change. It is life’s greatest constant that each moment something will be slightly different, and it is only at life’s end that it ceases and we become static. Alaska raced straight and fast through the labyrinth, desperately trying to outrun a change that started when she was eight years old. Instead she became trapped in the now, never looking backward or forward, never thinking to swerve and leaving everything “to be continued.”…
