Shawshank Redemption Essay

In The Shawshank Redemption friendship is a big part of the whole plot.In the prison in which the inmmates are in friendship is what in way keeps them sane and stops them from going insane.Especially main characters such as Andy and Red who depend on eachothers friendship to have a meaning to live on.Also you can see friendship is a big thing because everyone in the prison is with someone and has a friend no one is alone.It seems as if they use friendship not only to show they’re not alone but to show they have someone who will also protect them if anything was to go wrong.
In the movie we can see that friendship is a big deal through someone like Brooks.He manages to be sane in prison and sort of finds a meaning to live through his friends in
prison.Since
they are with him everyday he decides it’s best to give them meaning to him and treat them as family.We see him sort of get depressed we he get’s out of prison because he has no one to live for no meaning anymore since he was alone and only lived for his friends.He valued friendship very highly, so he shows when he writes a card before he takes his own life to his friends in prison whose friendship meant a lot to Brooks.
The value of friendship is also shown through Red and Andy’s relationship.Red at first didn’t really have a care in the world just like Brooks because he felt like he was going to spend all his life in prison.”Remember Red,hope is a good thing,maybe the best of things,and no good thing ever dies.”The hope that Andy mentions symbolizes Red and Andy’s friendship the thing that they both had and made them stick together.The hope that Andy gave Red showed Red that friendship was strong since it was not only something Andy said but he also gifted him a true freedom from eevrything to go live with him at Mexico where Andy wanted to go to escape since he said it was going to be relaxing.
Friendship is valued a lot at Shawshank.This is seen since at the start it was kind of difficult for Andy to be friends with anyone the other prisoner’s didn’t take much liking to him.Until he showed how much he wanted to become friends with some of the inmmates.When he is at the roof with them and he risks his life by going and talking to Captain Hadley.In the process giving him information and free services in exchange for giving the people he wanted to be friends with beers.This showed how much friendship is valued in Shawshank seein that even
Andy would put his life on the line when he hardly does that.From there on friendship was a valuable thing that when Andy needed something his other friends would try to help and doing it in a way in which they wouldn’t notice by giving him the tools to escape.So friendship is something that is seen as a neccesity in prison so people do not go insane and can overall try to survive their prison life.Prison life can be solitary confinement and if the people at Shawshank hadn’t found friendship they would have not been able to survive as long and proably would have killed themselves just like the old man in the movie Brooks did when he had noone outside in the real world.
Overall friendship is a common theme throughout Shawshank and it’s the thing that led to freedom at the end.Friendship demonstrated to be hope,interaction and prosperity for the inmates.The value of friendship is what made up most of people beliefs within the prison to try and be a better person everyday.Like Toomy is inspired so much by Andy his friend that he tries to get educated which he does by him.That’s what friendship can do it’s valued to be the most important thing in the prison.Friendship is valued as the prosperity and hope of
inmates.
