In the short story “Indian Education” by Sherman Alexie, the narrator’s life parallels Alexie’s in many ways. The narrator of this story is a boy named Victor who lives on a reservation with his two parents. Like Victor, Alexie grew up on a reservation in the state of Washington. Both boys were teased and bullied by their fellow classmates and initially decided to go to school outside of their reservation for greater educational opportunities.…
The Indian School experiment set out to "kill the Indian and save the man". I believe this relates to the old saying, "the only good Indian is a dead one" in that the school essentially tried to kill the Indian spirit by attempting to "American-ize" the students. The process of assimilating the students into the "white man's way" took away a very important part of the children's being--their culture.…
One element of the problem of achieving the American Dream in “Unequal Opportunity: Race and Education” by Darling-Hammond talks about non-white children of their education resources, finding the curriculum teacher and not willing to achieve their goals. On the SAT test the non-white people did alright but the white people did well and didn’t have to worried about their scores. In many minorities students are located poor neighborhood and they have worst education because where they live at. “Many schools serving low-income and minority students do not even offer the math and science courses needed for college.”…
Lisa Delpit says that for students to be successful in school and eventually the workplace, they have to acculturate into the culture of those in power and doing that they lose who they are, their identity(Delpit, pg 25).. She talks about children who are economically better off than students who come from lower income homes, that opportunity and acceptance is better, but children of color are left to fend for themselves. I agree with Delpit because too often teachers are constantly telling students how to speak, read, and write they forget that children have lives outside of school and what may be their norm and what they expect, is different in their student’s lives.…
1). In article Native Americans Left Behind in the Economic Recovery by Katherine Peralta argues and proves “According to the EPI report, American Indians and white Americans attain high school diplomas at roughly the same rate. But almost twice as many native people have less than a high school education compared with whites, and their rates of completing bachelor’s and advanced degrees are also about half that of whites. And even when American Indians are similar to whites in terms of factors like age, sex, education level, marital status and state of residence, Austin wrote, their odds of being employed are 31 percent lower than those of whites”. This article explains, presents the true facts and helps you understand why Indians are left behind in terms of finding jobs by comparing their reasons of unemployment rates to the…
“Indian,” what exactly does that mean. If you ask a random person on the street they would probably tell you a lot of things that can be found in a Hollywood movie. Fancy outfits, bows and arrows, horseback riding, fights with cowboys, and the list goes on. While some of what the general person knows about Indians is true we have to realize that the term “Indian” was made up by the white man. This is something that I didn’t really ever think about until writing this paper. I was just like that random person on the street who just remembered what I saw on the TV. We really should be calling “Indians” Native Americans because that is what they are. They are the native people of this land we call “America.” They were here before the European settlers came here.…
It has been found that someone’s ethnicity can have an effect on their educational achievement, as in 2006 73% of pupils of Indian origin gained 5 A*– C passes at GCSE compared with 56% of white and 47% of black pupils. It has been found that African students tend to underachieving in the educational system compared to others, with them being below average reading ability and tend to receive less GCSE’s than whites and Indians. They are also least likely to stay in post 16 education, and if they do it’ll more likely to be taking vocational qualification.…
As a result of, those in the upper third of our educational and income structure are more likely to show allegiance to society. Therefore, teachers may try to convince themselves that education’s main function is to promote inquiry, not iconography but in fact the socialization function of schooling remains dominant at least through high school and hardly disappears in college. So, education as socialization tells people what to think and how to act and requires them to conform. As a result of, education as socialization influences students simply to accepts the tightness of our society. American history textbooks overtly tell us to proud of American and demoralized being Africa American immigrant.…
Sherman Alexie, author of the novel Reservation Blues, explains that at the start of an Indian’s life on a reservation, he or she is destined to be hopeless. First, parental guidance is infrequent leaving many infant Indians with an insufficient childhood. After that, Indian children experience poor education revolved around heaps of stereotyping and bullying from their white classmates and teachers. Next, any sort of entertainment such as television, music, and books are extremely rare. Then leaving their life with a lack of stability and sustainability, an Indian grows up on a reservation with little to no job opportunity. On top of that, reservations are subjected to commodity food; food hardly sufficient and plentiful enough to satisfy a human’s basic needs. All of these factors fill the lives on the reservation with despair, causing most Indians to indulge in alcohol, violence, and suicide. And so, hopelessness within modern Native Americans ultimately leads to self destructive behavior.…

It’s important to know the ins and outs of how things happen. Discrimination is a big thing that doesn’t seem real to a lot of people but, it is to American Indians. When it comes to the younger American Indians it is especially important as to why inside and outside influence might play a role in discrimination in the drug role and the minors in that society. The further you look into it the more you start to see mainly in the upper Midwest region.…
A variety of material disadvantages that may confront ethnic minorities coming from working class backgrounds are they do not achieve the same level of education. The main achievers are Indian, Chinese and African students, but the lowest achievers are Turkish, Bangladeshi And Afro Caribbean students. The white working class students are the lowest achieving, which is peculiar because most sociologists are white who stereotype and label other students from different backgrounds.…
For the indigenous tribes of India, their ethnicity alone establishes their disadvantage. Many of the indigenous people of India are discriminated against based on their birth into a caste or their birth outside of the caste. “Caste membership, and hence social status, is hereditary (determined by birth) and not susceptible to alteration through personal effort” (Waughray, 2010, p.328). For those born as outcastes, or in modern terms as Dalit, life is difficult based on the misfortunate of being born. Traditionally, Dalits have been considered untouchable and have been resigned to performing the most undesirable share of societal work. They are given tasks that other castes are not willing to…
